Thread: Surrendering the Skill...
I'd like to hear what the Merchant community says about this.
I'm a smuggler and have been making a pretty penny selling spice on my vendor. I may have to give up merchant (and maybe artisan) so that my character can have some skills that I want it to have.
Here's the question: Is it unethical for me to still sell spice on my vendor since the vendor doesn't disappear? I don't want to be an exploiter. I don't want to piss off all the merchants out there. But, it would be nice if I still had the income from spice sales.
I've really enjoyed my stint as a merchant. It's a lot of fun to have a shop and employees and have to advertize and stuff. I may return to this profession. But for now, I'm going to have to move on.

This is such a hot button topic.
1. Using a Vendor when you don't have the skill to "manage" one is certainly unfair to the merchants out there who are looking for people to sell them things they can sell to their customers.
2. It is not an exploit in the traditional usage of the word. SOE's position on it seems to be that they want to change it but they aren't punishing people for taking advantage of it.
3. Will it anger merchants? Some. It doesn't anger me. I wish you wouldn't do it. I wish you would get a merchant to sell your spice for you. That is what you are supposed to do...you make things.. merchants sell things..
4. We hope you won't be able to do it much longer. One of the major issues for merchants is the fact that our skills can be used by those who don't keep the profession. That isn't fair and it is a misuse of the game design which has skill point requirements for a reason. You are supposed to decide what you want to do and use your skills to do that. If you want to do something else you are supposed to give up those skills (and the benefits) and do that other thing. If you still need the goods or services you had before you are supposed to buy them. Giving up merchant (and business skills) and still using the vendor seems harmless enough to you because you feel that making the spice should inherrantly allow you to sell it. But vendors aren't the only way to sell things. There is the bazaar and the smuggler on the street corner selling from his landspeeder. Those are still available to you. Using a vendor is a specific talent like firing a carbine or using a flamethrower. You are supposed to have certain skills to use them.
(and before I'm flamed by an Architect..yes I know you can't sell your PA Hall on the bazaar. But you can sell it on the street corner. If you want the service of a 24 hour Vendor either get merchant skills (and keep them) or hire someone to do it for you. We are looking at ways for making that relationship better in the Merchant Top 5 post)
Thanks for the non-hostile replies. It seems that the general concensus of merchants I've talked to is that I should get rid of my vendor upon surrendering the skill.
And, thus, that's what I'll do.
I hope one of our guildies decideds to open a vendor!
Thanks again!

Obed if none of your guildmates is open to getting the skills ask around for merchants in your area. I'll bet you will find several who are in the market for spices to sell.

This is probably the best post I've seen from someone who cares about the profession that he is leaving. The thought thathe will remove his vendors after he leaves Buisness reallywarms my heart.
It is so much better then freaking morons that just just bust in and bust out of my profession just to get the Wookie vendor.
As a fellow Smuggler/Merchant, if I was on the same server as you Obed, you would have a non-commishioned vendor free of charge. If you do make a character in Flurry, let me know. My vendors will remain open for you. /applaud /salute

Thanks, Balkstar. I appreciate that. Sometimes we get pretty hostile and selfish in this game. But, it's just a game. And, for my money it's also a community of sorts. And one of my main goals is to be a good member of the community.
