Ok all of you are now screaming at me horribly right? Well listen for a sec.
How about allowing people to rent storage space. Say you pay 1k per 10 spots a week(day?) for storage. Now this sink wouldnt be to bad and paying 100k a week(day?) for 1000 storage lots isnt that much really. This would help remove gold from the economy efficiently. Also you could buy a special terminal that you could place in your house which allows for you to access the rentable storage area while crafting, or you can access it from the bank area. Well tell me what you think.

Your post assumes all we do is use vendors for storage. Personally, I need the space for selling my goods.

I wouldn't mind renting space as long as the fee was affordable. I use my space for selling items, and as most architects will tell you, you can make 10 of each item and use over 1000 slots easily.

Well it's still an idea. Would definately be an opportunity for a huge money sink lol. Though it would pretty much render the merchant profession less useful.
Maybe they could reflect the merchant maintenance cost by how many items the owner has stored/for sale in it? The more items, the more you pay. The maintenance atm. is a joke imo. - far too low.
As I recall, non-NPC vendors' maintenance costs reflect how high your items in it are priced. I only used those for a brief time while I was levelling merchant. I switched to NPC vendors when I could, both because they look nicer, but also because their maintenance cost is extremely low (almost talking slave labor here lol).

Well, even if it's for sale, you still use your vendor as storage.
What's the need of having 130 identical item on a vendor, and so for each item you can make?
On a side note, with the curent limit, storage with vendor isn't a problem.
1 backpack full of empty = 1 item on vendor.
So 1 vendor : 2500 storage.
2 vendor : 6000 storage.
So even with the current limit, and my only 2 vendors, I won't have much problem dealing with stock as I'll only have to pick up items from 1 vendor and move them to the other once or twice in a week.
With backpack, current limit of master merchant : 660 * 50 = 33000. Not that bad really.

This isn't UO. And a change like that would not be bad, but isn't very likely.
