Thread: 'Word of Mouth' suggestion from a non-merchant

I suggest the devs reinstituting the 'word of mouth' skill that was removed. I understand that cities would be very crowded with NPC's if they are allowed to be placed anywhere. So this is my proposition:

Allow NPC vendors to be placed in a city, but only in certain areas. Some cities have a 'market' district. Zone the area so Merchants can place a NPC there to sell their wares. With this, a question is asked. What about the cities that don't have a market area? Simple, allow the vendors to be placed in a merchant guildhall or allow a limited number of vendors be placed against walls of buildings near starports or cantinas.

So you ask, limited number? Sure, limit the number of vendors placed in a city, but allow only one vendor per merchant.

I ask for this because vendors are so spread out over the different player cities that it may take hours to find what I desire . I would rather spend my time enjoying the game rather than spending that time searching. I hope this catches on.

Sounds like the Everquest "Bazaar', which equals lag-city. Personally, I like the idea of looking around for vendors, making people travel and move around, keeps people from constantly hanging around the ports and whatnot. Plus I get to show off my house : )
If they do make a bazaar type thing, the dev's should definetly force players to Keep business4 or whatever to place a merchant. None of this , place it and then drop the skill stuff. No,.better yet,..you HAVE to be a Merchant with vendors I to even get in! Becasue they dont allow those little vendor droids, heh. Heck,.let's just make it Vendors4 as a requirement,.that way, maybe people will sell thier stuff to merchants to sell for them like they should! Gwar har har! Evil!

Hell, make it so only master merchants get a vendor in the city.

This is the kind of constructive thinking that will help this profession IMO. The bazaar for EQ did wonders for the player economy. Made items widely available in a central location. To add my little 2cp, I think there could be maybe different types of public vendors in these "market places" that MERCHANTS can go to and put stuff up for sale. Like there would be the arms vendor and in his list is a name of every merchant registered to sell with him. You click on a merchant name and theres the list of items that merchant is selling. Would add to lag...maybe....but that would mean the suggestion would be a success and ppl would be liking it would it not?

They would like it up until the moment it took 5 minutes to retrieve something then they would stop using it. We keep trying to bring the sales back to the static cities and I'm not sure that is the answer. I think the answer is finding a way to clear the clutter of empty vendors and increase the ability for people to search for merchandise they want. Right now the global map is useful for finding a general "type" of merchandise but useless for finding specific items or prices. If we increased the ability for people to find locations for specific merchandise I think people would gladly travel to get it.

I don't think we need more traffic in static cities. Especially not heavily populated cities like Coronet.

On Bria, most static cities see very little traffic. Mos Entha comes to mind. Even Mos Espa. There are player cities nearby and I think we'd see a more spread out population and decrease lag. I still think it would be a great idea to have a marketplace.

What about allowing tents to be placed a bit closer to cities than the radius for all other player houses, that way the first ring of player placed building you will find around a city will be merchant tents, or designate a spot close to a city for tent placement only. that could get them out of the lag area, but give merchants a bit of a market advantage.

Sounds like a good idea to me. However, I still think integrating a marketplace in NPC cities would be a wonderful idea.
