Just out of curiosity, given that Master Merchant takes up valuable SP, is it possible to keep vendors you have placed, if you then drop merchant?

When you drop your merchant skills, you will lose the ability to control the vendors you gained with those skills. The vendors will still work to sell items, until they run out of items or maintenance. You cannot add anything to them for sale.
