I have 4244 in merchant and I have about 450 items on all my vendors combined and they are giving me a full message. now about 150 of those items are full packs. are the vendors reading what's in those packs?

Yes.
50 items in a pack = 50 items against your limit
Empty pack = 1 item.

Actually, 50 items in a pack = 51 items against your limit, doesn't it?

Empty pack = 1 item
Pack with 1 item in it = 1 item
Pack with 2 items in it = 2 items

No, the pack itself doesn't count when it has items in it.

That was intentional and to your benefit so you don't get charged an extra slot to package your items together.

True it was intentional, but if you have an ALT character, there is a workaround.
OFFERS TO VENDORS. You can offer up to 25 items (backpack full of items counts as 1 item) to a vendor for 30 days at a pop.
The items offered do NOT count towards your max amount of items.

That was intentional too but don't count on it lasting forever. I have asked the devs to make changes to the offers system including the limits. I expect if they make those changes they will not allow you to use backpacks to get around the limitations any longer. It is in now because they apparently agreed that 25 items was far to low for our purposes.

Hi Kazmo, despite our differences on Radiant....
I am sorry you failed to understand that the items inside the pack count now. DocSavag worked hard to let us know here in the merchant forum what was going on. In fact if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have gotten the break on the backpack not counting when it had items. ( This was particularly requested for docs, BEs, and armorers who often bundle their goods for sale ).
I have found that it hasn't affected me much as a chef the changes. It does affect the BEs that I have to buy from, much less selection on their vendors now
.
They made the items count in the backpack to prevent folks from storing items on the vendor. Say 4,000 backpacks with 50 items each is 200,000 items....clearly not what they want.
Again sorry you didn't understand that.
