Thread: Why not make those empty city buildings available to Merchants?
You cant seriously be suggesting the devs add something to enhance the merchant profession!
Besides global vendor search largely makes your location irrelevant (except I suppose people will a low combat level will be reluctant to go to places out in the sticks on the more dangerous planets unless theres a nearby shuttle.....) selling stuff is basically just one big price war now

Nearly every major non-player city has several buildings that are enterable, but not in use. Why not make these available to Merchants for shops? I'd be willing to pay a hefty maintenance fee to rent a space in Theed near the starport or palace... It seems like this could liven up the NP cities and make spending the skill points on Merchant more valuable.
There is already a category on the Bazaar for Buildings, so they go up for auction at a per hour maintenance price (ie, if you bid 250, you're agreeing to pay250 creds per hour for a fixed number of hours). After winning, you have X amount of time to go to that building and pay your fees up front (maybe 30 days worth?) Near the end of the 30 days, you'll have the option to renew your lease (with a slight rent increase, say 5%) or cancel. If you fail to pay, all your vendors and items are either deleted or dumped into the bazaar for auction.
My server is down ATM, so I thought I'd try to do something constructive...

I think that's a great idea J'Asper. Although instead of renting the entire building because that would be restrictive to how many people could use it, maybe designate certain areas/rooms within the buildings as mini-lots that could be rented to Master Merchants where they could place one vendor within the "lot" area and perhaps up to 10 items for display.
At one time they were talking about making some of the buildings rentable for living space for players so this would be an interesting extension of that concept. ![]()

I like the idea of being able to do business in NPC cities. The problem with this is that the first few merchants who get these spot will feed a couple million credits into renting these spots. A few merchants would hold these spots indefinitely. There's a finite amount of space and only a small group would have access to use this. We could just as easily have a vendor droid thats works like the merchant barker that holds maybe 100 items and can be placed in a city like the barker droid and people could buy stuff. When you left the planet or logged out the droid would store just like regular droids.
How would finite amounts of space be any different that what we have now? I bet you'd be surprisedwhen most people did not move into Coronet if something like this was implemented. I'd much rather have apartment space in Bestine, Mos Eisley or even Keren.
Who cares if someone sinks millions into "The Spot". With JTL being owned by 99% of players, distances mean nothing now if they have a starport.

I made a similair suggestion on an alternative thread about the buildings.
You could set it up so you could have merchants or maybe you could set it up so people could move in to 'city' appartments for premium rents.
How about creating a real market? Merchants can set up their vendors in a large open area al;l together - all touting pasing trade.
Imagine an area in Coronet that hand 20-30 player vendors selling erverything from Spice to starships?
Just a thought .... but the Devs need to think of making the cities more engaging - there is no real community except in the canteens!
