Thread: Make merchant take less skill points....

keep in mind i love merchant and wanted to be one sense before the game came out.


The whole merchant proffesion is eye candy, you really dount need 6 vendors you can just stick everything on one, picking species and cloths really douse not matter, reduced vendor and bazzar fees is a joke, the 20% on sturctures is nice but only saves like 1k a week on something. the only really good thing is plantary advertising but the forum works just as well if not better. so i think they should lower the skill points you need for it by at least 20+

Just because you do not take advantage of the other aspects of Merchant does not mean that there worthless. having 6 Vendors is good if you want to be more specialized to your customers. I hate having to go through pages and pages of inventory just to find something on someones vendor. As a armorsmith I can see you using all 6 just for that profession alone. But why are you a master merchant anyway then? sounds like all you need is 3-0-0-0 so surrender everything else so that should give you more then your 20 wanted points back



Don't forget about placing merchant tents, and being able to customise your vendor with clothing is just a neat idea. if you don't want or need these other "eye candy" abilities then don't learn them.

This is a bit of a tough subject. For the number of skill points we spend for MM are the features really worth it (from a total game-balance perspective)? Personally I think we're being short-changed on abilities.


Three ways to go about making the point expenditure more worthwhile:


1) Reduce the amount of points needed.

2) Add features for the same points (extra lots, city vendor placement, more bazaar slots, higher bazaar price cap, etc.)

3) Take Merchant-like abilities away from non-Merchants (fewer bazaar slots, fewer lots, higher maint. fees, etc.)


I'd rather see a lot of #2 and a teeny bit of #3 but if all the Devs can handle without getting poop on their legs is #1 then I'd take that over a poke in the eye.

hey john, like i said in the begining on my post is i love being a M. merchant and i use all of the merchant ablilties, but what i am saying here is there not really "usefull" skills like in the other professions, and someone with novice can be just as good a merchant as a master, and we prob wont get anything usefull skills, like adv over other people useing the bazzar or shuttle discounts or maybe being able to place a bazzar in player cities ect for a long long long time so untill then merchant should take less points to learn

Seems to me like the direction they're going in is to pound #3 pretty heavily. But even *if* they go wholeheartedly down this route, and basically require any serious seller to be a Master Merchant, I *still* think the profession doesn't even vaguely balance with any other for "advantage gained vs. points spent."

The LAST thing I want to see is vendors in cities. Places like Bestine are already overcrowded and laggy enough without players dumping their vendors into the mix as well. There's nothing wrong with placing a house or tent just at the edge of a no-build zone for whichever city you want to sell in. I have a house 700m outside of Bestine that sold over500k worth of merchandise plus a holocron my first day of spamvertising in the city. If you advertise well and have a decent location you can make great money.

I don't believe reducing skill point costs is an option here. The professions have skill points for a reason..that reason is to balance how many professions and skills you can have at one time. Reducing merchant skill points mean you will spend them somewhere else...that will unbalance the whole system. Frankly the current scenario is unblanancing enough because people are using skill perks from the merchant profession and using their skill points for something else.


If you feel the skill boxes in merchant aren't worth the cost .. don't use those skills. If you can't do without them then they ARE worth the skill points.


Every profession has skill boxes they don't feel are useful or worth the cost. This isn't going to cause the development team to gut the skill point system. We can ask for new features and we are. We can even hope they give us some serious revamp love like they are doing for Chefs and planning for Smugglers. But starting from a "remove skill points" standpoint will, in my opinion, achieve nothing. You will get a very brief "we disagree" reply to any such request.

Ummm, I use all six of my vendors, and if I had more I'd use them too. I'm spread throughout the galaxy thanks. Just because it's not useful to you, doesn't mean it's useless to me.

I agree with JT. I have 3 stores on 3 different planets. Just because one person doesn't use all 6 vendors, doesn't mean we all don't. In fact, I sometimes wish I had more. For the way my stores are set up, I could easily use 4 more.


I also like the Hiring feature. I like my Protocol Droid Vendors. And I really love my reduced fees. But I will agree that we could get some more abilities added in. Maybe more slots on the bazaar to sell stuff. Maybe better maintanance reductions. The Merchant Tent was Okay, if you use them. Maybe something else along the same lines. Stores taking up less lots. Or more lots granted with Master Merchant, especially when Guild Halls take NINE slots.

Yeah 6 vendors isn't needed, I would say 4 is good.One is find for one shop but what if you have three like me?
