Does anyone know if there is a limit to how much merchant experience you can get in a day (if you keep training and don't hit the soft cap) ?

The absolute maximum you can get is 80k xp and that is the hard cap for the profession.
I frequently get this in less than 24 hours and the daily trips to Aurilia make me insane because of it.
Like all other skills, your cap will increase as you get higher up the branch.
The general rule (for most but not all skills in the game) is twice the xp required for your highest box.
If your highest box required 10k xp, your cap would be 20k.
The tier 4 skills in merchant require 40k, so the cap is 80k.

Thanks for the info.
Theoretically, if you camped out at the village, would it be possible to get more than 80k in a day if you kept logging in every couple of hours to cash in the exp?

The only cap is determined by your skill boxes and it isn't limited to a particular timeframe.
There is nothing that says "you've earned a total of 100k xp today so you can't have any more."
However, earning 80k xp in 24 hours is not an easy task.
Assuming you had 12 vendors with maintenance paid up and running, you would earn 43200 xp.
That means to make up the balance of the 80k xp you would need 736 clicks by players and each player can only count once every 10 minutes.
Entrance fees can also add to your xp total.
If your xp seems to have stopped, try going into the building that has your vendors.
When vendors aren't loaded into the world, they don't give xp.
Once they load (by having a player enter the room with them) they will catch up on all the xp cycles that they have missed.
