I know, who the heck is this Deornwulf guy and who does he think he is posting in the Merchant forum. "I've never seen him," Joe L33t Poster Dude said.
Well, I have been playing for a long time, I just don't take much time to post. But with the current crisis, I feel as though my two master merchants have become less than useful. Here's my try at catching your eye and getting some cool suggestions for our wonderful corrospondent to take to the table with the developers. I may be an unknown but I think I have some good ideas.
The merchant class is all about making money so these are some of the things that I think merchants should be able to do in the game. Some of the items on my list are meant to be paired, so take that into account.
1. Merchants should get extra lots, like 10 extra, even if the number of usable lots by a sinlge playeris capped. See number 2. If number 2 is totally unworkable then just give Master Merchants 2-4 extra lots.
2. Merchants should be able to rent lots to other players, up to whatever number the Devs think should be the max. For example, Master Merchant X has 20 lots but can only place structures on 14 of them. Merchant X could then rent the other 6 lots out to players to bring their totals up to 14.
3. Master Merchants should be able to set up consignment vendors. Admin rights could be given to place items on the vendor or remove those same items from the vendor. A percentage of the sale price would go to the Master Merchant.
4. Malls - Placed only by Master Merchants.
5. Warehouses - Placed and adminstered by merchants. Other players can rent the space for whatever amount the merchant wishes to charge for maintainance.
6. Galaxy Wide Search - Moved to be an Advertising 4 function.
7. Galactic Stock Market - A long time ago, there was this game called "Sundog - The Frozen Legacy." It had a stock market. Why not institute one with Merchants acting as brokers. The Exchanges could open and close at specific times or be continously open with all of the Indices either randomly generated or tied to real server events.
8. Storefronts within the NPC Cities - either as instanced spaces or simply on a first come basis for Master Merchants only. Surrendering Master Merchant would mean surrending the storefront. Even if it was limited to 20 per city, there should be more than enough to go around seeing as there are not many Master Merchants out there.
9. Apartment Buildings/Hotels- Made by Architects, placed by Mayors, run by Merchants.
10. Casinos - Need I say more?
Comments, suggestions, etc welcome. At least try to think of your top 5 ideas.

I'm against PC stores in NPC cities, simply because it gives the 20 players who get the spots a HUGE advantage that there is no way to match. And chances are those 20 will already have huge busy malls elsewhere.
Other than that, I like a lot of those ideas. I'd love more lots, I'd love to rent lots (out or in), I'd love to have consignment vendors, I'd love various sizes of "malls" (I have no desire to have my merchants be five of thirty in a huge PA, but five of ten in a small house, sure), and #6... Should've been done in the first place.
If there was a consignment method that was trustworthy and reliable, fewer crafters would feel obligated to work on Merchant, too, and it'd let the Merchants act as the middleman as was once intended, without investing huge money, huge accounting or huge risk.

Give Asty more lots, too, so I get more lots by proxy!

i dont think merchants need more lots
i think casinos are a good idea, but would be more fitting if placed by smugglers
i really like the idea of consignment vendors
