Thread: Thoughts on in-game SPAM as a replacement to the Advertising tree

What are your feelings on sending out mass emails in the game?

I have used the /who list and the copy and paste functions to send out hundreds of emails in a very short amount of time. I have used this to:

Advertise the Grand Opening of a new shop

Invite people to a Player City event

Hire hunters to gather resources on specific planets

Out of perhaps 400 e-mails I have sent, I have only gotten 2 complaints, both of which I sent an appology to. I find this form of advertising to be incredibly effective and it does not require any skill points. Obviously people could abuse it, but I think they would end up on someones /ignore lost or perhaps even reported if it was harassment.

So what are your thoughts on cold-calling and in-game spam? Do you use it? Would you use it? Should it be nerfed??

I like our way of doing it already better. It's passive advertising. I don't have to seek people out. Which isn't to say I'm against OTHER ways. You can always do both. I certainly wouldn't drop advertising to spam people.

How do you use the copy and paste functions?

Go into your Options/Controls and click on Keymap

Look for "Chat Copy" and "Chat Paste" and assign them to CTRL+SHIFT+C and CTRL+SHIFT+X respectively.

Now write an email, use the mouse to select the text and copy it.

If you want to spam people at random, you can goto a planet and type /who and look for the professions that may be interested in your product or service. Start sending new emails to them and all you have to do is paste in your letter and hit send. You can do about 10-15 emails a minute.

I was able to get over 75k units of very high quality herbivore meat by going to the planet it was spawning on, and sending e-mails to all the people with marksman or scout related professions. They were very glad to hear my offer for the meat and I would not have been able to get this good of a response through anyother means. The trade forums are nice, but I only got one person selling me meat from my posts to the trade forums, versus the 15+ that sold me meat from the e-mails.

Well I don't think many people are using spam to get their message out. If they were, you probably would have received some by now. As I said, out of 400 e-mails sent out, I only have recieved 2 complaints but have gotten numerous thank you's, not to mention tons of people attended our city event, my shop sales skyrocketed, and I got more meat than my guild ormy ads on thetrade forums could get combined.

I'm more curious to see if anyone else has tried mass emailing, and if so did they have any luck with it. If you are interested in trying, just be aware that most players do not wan't to recieve pure SPAM, so you have to write creatively and stay in character to make it FUN for them to get your message.

Thank you. Not sure how I had missed this, hiding right there in plain view.
