Thread: Petition: Merchant Tents in Cities

I don’t see the point of having a merchant tent out in the boons because honestly who is going to go set up a tent in the middle of no where? I would like to see small stands and tents in cities. I think this would be a great way to allow merchants to be more like merchants and get better publicity. Why shouldn’t people be walking around in town and see merchants on the sides of the roads?

Now there would have to be some restriction on the amount of tents placed in a city, because it could defiantly get out of hand. Also you shouldn’t be able to camp out one single spot for the hole day if there was a time out every 4 hours or something it would allow all people to get a fair chance at a ‘prime’ spot. Also there would have to be some kind of tax to have your tent in the streets of a city.

Now I realize that there could be quite a few issues with this but I think we should at least explore the idea of having merchant tents in cities.

Thanks for your consideration.

I agree. Putting a merchant tent in a city would really be a huge boost to this profession. I can also see the design challenges associated with it though. I'll put this on my wish list.

I'm pretty sure they're talking about the pre-gen cities, Trucegore, and not the player cities. You can't place these in downtown Theed..

Which brings up another point for the merchants. Don't get caught behind the curve when suddenly no one ever goes to the pre-gens cities anymore except to use the starport. I'm not sure if this will happen or not - I'm just starting to wonder if my marketing strategy should continue to focus around the pre-gen cities now that organized players can build there own. /shrug

Maybe it's for the best that you can't.

We have enough FPS problems in large cities as it is, and this kind of thing, while a great idea, would only make matters worse.

There is of course urban sprawl.

You can place your own tents in player made cities. In three-four weeks, when there are shuttleports, this will be a much more inviting idea.

I fully agree with this - the pre-player city hot suburban locations will soon be seeing a huge decrease in traffic.

Currently people trek out to the burbs to shop - where even in well setup locations, they often have to travel hundreds of meters to travel to another shop, and there is a good chance that the vendor will not have what the customer wants.

Enter player cities... the customer will be dropped off of the shuttle into a merchant based city, and literally have access to 10, 20, or even more high quality shops all within 50m of eachother. The city I am in has over 35 master crafters setup within spitting range of the shuttleport location... and more coming in every day. The way people are going to shop in the future is going to be dramatically different, act now and take advantage of it!

The issue with Player Cities is that first these things have to start growing. Every one I have seen so far is someone who had enough to buy a City Hall and convince a handful of people to move there, thus becoming an Outpost.

Another issue is Sales Tax. I don't want to charge it, and my customers don't want to pay it. Fortunately my shop is 1000m out of Tyrena and 500m from a Player City.

My question is, why are all these Player Cities right outside NPC cities? I think the whole purpose behind them was so that players could flesh out the areas that weren't already colonized(ie. Wayfar, Talus, Dantooine). I think that putting a city outside of Coronet or Theed defeats the purpose.

Other than that I would not mind moving to a Player City. I have just not found a person or a group yet who's serious about their city. Most people seem to be doing it just because it's new.

There are two main reasons they are so close to static cities.

1. They were there to begin with because the communities formed before mounts and were logically close to the transportation hub.

2. They are close because getting a city on Naboo, Corellia, and Tatooine you had to be quick to get a city down before 10 other peple did and the ones that did get them down were close to a city. There are exceptions to that but it is a factor.

I agree that building a player city right outside an NPC city serves no purpose. Your profile doesn't list what server you're on, Puck, but on Scylla, there are at least 9 large player cities I'm aware or that are far away from the NPC cites. And at least 5 of those already have the necessary citizens for a shuttleport and the subcomponents for that shuttleport built and waiting for December 5th - the earliest date they can acheive a level IV city. The city I'm a part of, Helios (in the dune sea between Anchorhead and Wayfar), is already making plans for the grand opening party and sales event on Saturday, December 6th.

I'm on Shadowfire, where things are kinda behind a lot of "older" galaxies. And having a city where yours is is perfect. One of my fellow game partners was thinking of putting a city near Wayfar. A lot of people go out there to explore the Dune Sea and Jabba, but Wayfar doesn't have a Shuttleport or good Med Center. That's a 5000m hike back to Bestine....
