So I learned Advertising I today, hoping that I would be able to give my vendor a custom greeting. I get back to my house but dont see any new options on my vendor menu....
So I decide to recreate it since theres not alot in it and I wanted to make use of the NPC option I'd got at Novice Merchant (was setup at Business IV)
So I get my new vendor and lo and behold there is the Ad Barking option, so I set it up (seems to be a generic message at this level), put my stock back in and off we go.
So there I am minding my own business making some things when a customer comes in, buys some stuff and leave and it was only at that point did I realise that I never saw anything from my vendor!
So is Ad Barking at Advertising I broken or can only people other than the merchant see it (which seems a bit stupid?)

sometimes it works - sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes the ad barking makes the vendor speak to someone outside your house - or even turn and face the wall. So a pretty useless skill imo.

While the entire line of advertising is useless and broken, yes. You have identified one of its many problems. When I enable barking on one of my vendors at the entry to my shop, it seems to be a fifty/fifty crapshoot whether or not she'll start barking. If she does, I believe the longest I've seen her keep working is about a half hour. And as mentioned, she often won't talk to peopel as they enter the shop, but rather wait until they leave and turn the corner outside. Then she'll turn to face the wall. Very nice.
It's a useless skill box.
Not quite as useless as Advertising 2, of course, which doesn't work in any way, shape, or form for any period of time.
At Adv 3 you get on the planetary map. That comes the closest to "working" as any of them, but the map placement doesn't survive a server down. So you have to be there to re-initialize yourself on the planetary map every time the servers burp, or you'll spend a large percentage of your time without being on the map.
Thus far, most of the line of being a merchant has been nothing but a convenient place to hold my training points until I need them for something that works. Having NPC vendors is, at this time, absolutely the ONLY reason that I'm still hanging in there as a merchant. And that's only because they are still borked so they don't charge the insane maintenance fees. (Yes, I'm aware of that bug and I'm still using them. So shoot me.) Having seen reports of what other vendor types are charging if you have 30 or 40K worth of stuff on your vendor, there's no way I'm paying that. If that get's "fixed" before the rest of our class is put into order, I'll just bow out entirely and start taking orders by e-mail only and delivering in person.
Thus far, my experience in the Merchant profession has been nothing but painful.
