My vendor can take items that no one else can use - an Imperial uniform hat and my special edition goggles...

Worried less about the items than I am annoyed that the vendor can "wear" my hat

Oooo! Neat trick! However, as far as I am aware, any clothing or items you hand to your vendor, you do not, can not, get back.

You can't get them back. It is documented on the vendor when you click "Customize Uniform" on the radial menu. It also has been widely explained here and elsewhere.
