Thread: Anybody use ballot boxes for customer surveys?

I made a ballot box tonight because I thought it might make an interesting piece of furniture. When I started playing with the vote feature, I was thinking it could be used as a customer survey tool. The interface stinks, but it might still be useful.

I was thinking I might start a survey about how people found the shop. Give them options such as Shop Sign, Planetary Map, Friend, Starport Shout, Bazaar, etc. Another one I thought of was simply a rating system asking how people compared my shop to others, Much Worse, Worse, About the Same, Better, and Much Better. I'd be curious how many people would actually fill out the survey and what their answers were. Sure, you'd probably get some people messing with you, but that's to be expected.

One downside seems to be that you can't view the results until the vote is closed, and when you close the vote it resets the darn thing completely so you have to put all the vote options and title back in. You can't easily see results without having to start from scratch. Another seems to be if there's a short lag between when you vote and when the vote is registered, you can vote a second time.

I'm sure it would help if they could work out some of these minor issues, but does anybody else use this and find it useful?

I bought one a long time ago, and tried to use it as you describe. Besides identifying effective advertising, I hoped to get a lead on what items to carry with a "What would you like to have found" type query.

Didn't work for me at all. I found it resets with the server reset, and since I rarely sign on more that once a day, the only votes there were the ones I saw placed. I could just ask themmore effectivly.

Perhaps if you get on in the AM and collect the votes at night it might do something for you as a questionaire.

I had decided it was just a tool for real-timevoting among people present with a "secret ballot" effect you couldn't get in chat, but your news about the multiple vote bug disables even that use.

/sigh

I also tried using one for a short while, but stopped after I discovered it would reset every day.

I had hoped it could give me feedback from people who came to the shop but didn't buy anything. Its easy enough to get in touch with customers via holomail, but getting info from potential customers isn't.

Maybe I should dust it off and start playing with it again...

The ballot box is a cool idea that just never got finished in the game. They did some work on it a few months ago but I'm not sure I remember what they fixed. (I think the inability to remove it from a strcuture once it was placed)

Would be nice if there were a "Comment Card" system that would allow us to tabulate opinions about various things in our business.

If they would just make them so they don't reset automatically, they'd be very useful

I love your application of the ballot box. To be honest I didn't even know it existed! Hopefully the Devs will fix it's interface (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

Where can I get one?

Most architects can make one, it is fairly low level IIRC.

But you do understant that the current bugs make it useless in most siturations.

Thanks for the info.

Yes, I get the idea from this post. But it's always interesting to see 'new' things.
