my vendors are still all short and fat. I took down all my old vendors since most where either short and fat, tall and fat or just plain fugly. So I put new ones up and they are still short and fat of just plain fugly. Am I doing something wrong here? Does putting cloths on them change the way they look?

No, putting clothes on them just makes them short fat and well dressed. This is a big problem with the NPC selection system for merchants. It takes continual trial and error, create a vendor, look at, delete, try again over and over to get a decent looking NPC vendor. Good luck.
