I'm a Master Ranger and I do not have the Artisan skill at all. If I want a vendor, what do I need to do? I imagine I need to get a Merchant to set it up, but does the Merchant also need to maintain it regularly? And if so, what sort of access does the Merchant need to the structure where the vendor is located?

You'll have to get a Merchant to create a vendor in your shop. The Merchant will be the only one who can sell items on the vendor, and put maintenance in, and all of that. We've asked for giving other people admin on vendors, but no luck yet.
In order for a Merchant to create a vendor in your shop, they need to be on admin. So, have some trust in the Merchant you choose.

Oh - and any sales made by the vendor go to the Merchant's bank account, and the Merchant gets the sales notification email.
So, you'll also have to trust that you're getting all the proceeds from your sales, or at least your proper cut of the sales.

It's too bad we can't have vendors just to use as drop boxes. It's a pain to try and meet up with someone when you've bought something off of the trade boards. Mine is just about dead and no longer talking to the world....

Agreed that a drop-box is much needed. Even though I have vendors and can point folks to them to drop off things, it would be nice for those without vendors, and I don't see how a limited capability such as that would "infringe" upon merchant's or artisan's turf.
WoW has a similar feature: You can email items to other players.
