I've read about the bugs, problems, and perks. What I couldn'e find anywhere is what people actualy do as merchs. Except for being a Tailor or something and selling your stuff, how can you act as a merch without being dependant on some artisan profession?

While I run several vendors for my own goods I run three vendors that stock items that I don't produce or gather myself. I run a Bartender vendor and a Spice vendor for the local Cantina in our player city. I also run a Resource Vendor in our city which is stocked by various citizens looking to make a profit on their harvesting skills.

So you go around and ask people if they want to use a vendor of yours for a price?

I have my own vendors for my personal use (3 of them). If a friend needs one and can't afford the skill points I take care of it for them too (I have a vendor for a BE friend). I don't get anything out of it, but I'm glad to help. Putting a vendor for someone I don't know would be a real headache though.

I buy low (usually the result of [holo] grinding and often off the bazaar) and sell higher on my vendor

I make very little of what I actually stock (one of the pit falls of being a DE)

I don't do this as a rule. I have, in the course of other communications invited various crafters to sell through me and have even had several successful relationships of this nature. Currently all of the business I am doing is with my guildmates and fellow citizens of my player city. Those conversations typically start up over drinks at the cantina..

I run two shops that cater primarily to people learning smuggling. Some are hologrinders, others are people who intend on remaining in the smuggling business. I enjoy running into my customers when that happens, I often get good feedback from them, and it's always a kick seeing my goods being put to use.

I have:

  • Two vendors to sell clothing

  • One for orders

  • One that sells anything I have laying around taking up space that I don't want

  • One that buys and sells resources

  • One Information vendor that contains packs with information about our city in the details, as well as directory listings for every shop in town.

I used to sell armour for a guildie who has since quit the game, used to sell weapons for a friend who has since become a master merchant himself and set up one of the best shops on our server with another weaponsmith, and used to sell stims and things for a doctor friend.

Merchant is a great support skill for crafters but is by no means dependant on craft skills to be able to work effectively.

Basically a merchant runs vendors. It doesn't sound like much but there is a lot of interaction in getting suppliers for stock, and creativity in getting people to buy things from your vendors.

I basicaly run a pawn shop. I buy things I find just tooling around at low prices, and sell them at a markup. I order things in bulk from artisans and then markup. IM also a rares and loot hunter. I do fairly well with the loots and rares, I like to fight, and I like vending, so this way I can put all the loots i get on my vendor. Plus the resell holo market is great right now. Im gettin em for 150k and sellin as quick as i can stock em for 300k. I love the grinders, make em grind me a bunch of statues for 5k each and sell em for 20k.

I use 2 of my vendors for my own crafted goods (one for armor the other for weapons). I have a bartender which deals in "illegal" goods like spice, sliced weapons, and attachments. I then have a general goods vendor that I use to sell my guild mates items on as well as my wide selection of powerups. I also have a bazaar which i use to sell special deals on (i.e., orders that i have extra product or random trinkets that I aquire), I'm still waiting on consignment sales so that I can turn this one into a real true bazaar where people offer items and I resell them (alas, SOE... why). And then I have a custom orders vendor. My guild mates also place lots of vendors in my mall, so far I have 4 other vendors placed by guild mates, and that only seems to climb every week.

So, as you can see I keep myself very busy with WS and AS orders, as well as buying new stock for my other vendors. I have lots of fun doing it to. There's just something satisfying about running a successful business.

I am an armorsmith, and merchant is what I use to sell mostly my own goods, but I also sell on from certain people who ask me to.

Merchant is useful to me for : Planetary ad, multiple vendors, 20% off structure maint ( I usually use all my 10 lots )...and the signs and custom uniforms are a small but nifty bonus

The majority of skillboxes give negligible benefit for their skill points, but I am hoping to see more added sometime.

In short, i sell...stuff.

In long, I sell power to the tune of abuot10-17 million resource units per rad cycle. I only ever crafted to grind through artisan to get to merchant. Resources are a boon for those who don't want to craft. Heh, I don't even actually harvest anymore with my own lots. I just manage employees, up to 26 per cycle currently... and we are branching out into minerals as well with 50 deep crust harvesters (figured i'd start small on that)
