This is going to be a LONG grind - Merchant was my first prof after I went silent. The trick is (and they don't teach you this in Merchant school), is to find a hook. Mine was skill tapes. I had "Crazy Groz's Discount Skill Tapes" right outside Coronet and Theed, the two most populated cities.
Next, Advertising - I'm a Master CH, but that doesn't matter for what you need to do - I got my hands on 2 capper spineflaps and named them "TellGrozantabiForSkillMods" and had them patrolling outside the starports. Have a CH train them for you, that's the easiest way, and you can get patrol, too. Be sure to not have them fly or walk through the center of the crowd, cuz that just gets annoying, but put them so people can see 'em.
After that, I made a macro that replied to people who sent me a tell about Skill Tapes. I gave them the coords for both of my shops.
While Merchant IS a tough grind, I found it rather relaxing and enjoyable. Plus, I made over 2 million credits selling skill tapes.
Good luck, from a holomerchant...

Stock, stock and more stock.
People will appreciate a well stocked vendor, and they will come back to it, an tell their friends about it.
Word of mouth is a powerful form of advertising.

Another good point, Sigarni.
And another point of advice, if you're grinding this prof - You won't get xp unless you have at least one item on each of your vendors. What I did to keep that from slowing me down was put 1 unit of some decent steel up on each of my vendors. In the item description, I referenced the 200k of it I have and if they were interested in it, they could purchase it directly through me.
Lots of little tips out there - just find something that works for you and go with it.

put a weekly "current stock" advertisement on your main galaxy and trade boards.
You would be surprised what this will draw in for you.

Wow all very good ideas. So far I like being a merchant, I made over 20 mil my first day as a novice merchant. I just wish that you got merchant xp for how much money you made
So far I'm stocking alot of differant things
Sliced comp armor, weapons that I made in a factory that I had my weaponsmith friends make me the schematics with my own resources.
I'm also buying alot of stuff to get visits and holding auctions where they can view the item for the buyout price on my vendor.
I'm gonna buy crates of muon and powerups and resell those also(not turning a profit but it's mainly for the xp).
