Think about how many people have dropped merchant, yet kept their items up there. I think that removing the empty ones from the map, will show the few vendors that are still stocked. Hence the item limit not needing to exist, and thus making everyone happy. Removing the vendors people dont have the skill for will probably lower the database, and removing registry for the 80% or so empty vendors on that map will also lower the database.

I think they will slowly remove themselves as they wont be able to add new items to vendors they havent the skill for.

Example. A vendor stocked with 60 items that the owner dropped when 3-0-0-1 merchant then dropped all the skills including novice artisan will no longer be able to have items added to it. So, once all items are bought or fall past 37 days the vendor will have 2 weeks til its destroyed. Then no more vendor.
