Thread: Reasons for no vendor limits (yet)

Devs,

I am against vendor limits of any kind (at this time) as they present immediate and resounding problems for many crafting professions. For instance:

Tailor:

The best tailor vendors I see stock an incredible variety of fashions and colors. With vendor limits, we will never again be able to find a peice of clothing in the right color without specifically asking a tailor to make it for you. I don't know about you, but I *like* the variety the best tailor shops have. Perhaps someday when tailors can make a dye tool we can start talking about vendor limits.

Droid Engineer:

Some of the Droid Engineers I know use vendors temporarily to store the *large* amount of sub-components you need to make a run of droids. You should not put limits unless you first increase the capacity of the factory crates. In fact, if you want to save a lot of database space, have factory crate sizes be customizable.

Artisan:

Power-up's come out of the factory in crates of *10*. A vendor with a decent variety and quantity of power-up's would use the merchant's entire space limit. Many weaponsmiths carry power-ups to enhance their weapon shop. If limits go into effect, all of those power-up vendors will be gone and the power-up business will be no more. Factory crate size would help a lot here, but even then, the merchant will not be able to put smaller amounts for those who just wish to try a few power-ups to see if they like them. In an ideal game, one could put up a few hundred of the same power-ups for sale in a crate and the buyer could buy as many or as few as he liked. The purchase would remove that quantity from that crate and place it in a new crate in the buyers inventory. If someone had a small power-up business, why do they have to make Master Merchant just to be able to sell them effectively?

This also affects those small-time merchants who specialize in one particular item due to playing time constraints. With these vendor limits, they won't be able to keep their vendor stocked.

These are just the immediate problems I know of. I'm sure that Chefs, Architects, Weaponsmiths, Armorsmiths, Doctors, and Bio-Engineers have the same problems with these limits as well. I'm just not experienced in their craft to be able to make an arguement for them.

In closing, I want to say that vendor limits should not be put in until you can address every merchants specific problems they will encounter first. Specifically, redoing how factory crates work and how items stack would be an incredible help. Every other MMORPG out there stacks items that are identical, except SWG. Why does this have to be? If you are having database size issues, fix it the right way. Don't put band-aid fixes in that anger a whole section of the playerbase and can potentially ruin the game economy.
