Here are the results of the poll I took last week.


Question:

How many advanced crafting classes (thiscan include anynon-novice class where you craft goods and sell them)do you and/or your "alts" play in addition to merchant?


Answer:

0: 8%

1: 58%

2: 24%

3+: 10%


Discussion: remember, these are all merchants answering this question. What we see is that over 90% of the merchants responding to this poll are advanced crafters themselves, and I believe that this poll is somewhat biased because it was done in the merchant forum. I believe if this poll were put in the other forums you'd see that 8% number shrink considerably. This means that the distinction that is constantly being made between merchants and crafters is a meaningless one, they are one and the same.


Question:

As a merchant, roughly what percentage of your sales come from you selling things that others (besides yourself and your "alts") have crafted?


0-10%: 78%

11-90%: 14%

91-100: 8%


Discussion: we can see here, clearly, that merchants are not currently selling other people's goods in any serious way. Nearly 8 out of 10 merchants sell no goods other than their own. And once again,I think that 78% number is artificially low because this poll was done in the merchant forum.


Question:

Assuming that you (at whatever level of merchant you are) had a vendor cap limit of 300 items per vendor, and the "tools" for running a vendor were beefed up significantly, how likely would you be to actively pursue the selling of other crafter's goods? (unlikely / neutral / very likely)?


unlikely: 76%

neutral: 5%

likely: 18%


Discussion: the results here were a little surprising to me. In general, what I think these results mean is that even if there were a really good consignment system in place (and other tools) people in general have no interest in selling things made by others, particularly if there were any sort of item count limitation. Even some merchants that were currently selling things of others said that they wouldn't be if there was an item count limitation implemented. I picked the 300 item number out of thin air without any ryme or reason, but I wanted to quantify this. Would that 18% number be higher if the number were 400? or 500? maybe, but I doubt it would be much higher.

What is the sample size of that poll? When was it taken with reguards to the forum being over run with people upset about the proposed changes?

Small sample size, true, around 40 people, but we do the best we can with what we have. The poll died out and lost steam after several days.

I'm not dismissing your results. I'm just suggesting that mood of the forum and the fourm visitors was far from normal during the time you were taking the poll. I didn't even have time to answer it as I recall.

I also wish you had a separate category for 0% vs under 11% Becuse 78% of the answers fall into a vague category that might mean some sales and might mean none. I might fall into that category but reading it to mean that I sell no items is wrong I sell many items for other people they just don't rise to a huge percentage of my over all sales at this time.

If you wanted to wait some time, and re-do the poll I'd be all for it. You might get a different answer to the last question somewhat, and if you changed the 300 to some other number that also might change the results a bit, but the answers to the other two are unlikely to change, as they would seem to not be "mood dependent".


My concern in doing this was just simply to raise the point that when we talk of consignment, and selling other players goods, and features that support that, and constantly draw the distinction between merchant and crafter, that we're ignoring 90% of the "merchants" in the game. Often that tiny minority of merchants who sell others goods are referred to as "true merchants" but that simply is not a realistic assesment of the state of the game.
