It would be a very nice addition to our profession if we could rent static shops inside non-player cities. Obviously not everyone would be able to get one, but thats the way business works. Whoever gets a shop, and is successful enough to pay the rent and make a profit, keeps it.

If neglecting the rent, the merchant is evicted ( all goods and furnishings dumped to a city depot and kept for a limited time ), thus freeing thatshop for someone else.

This would :

  • Add depth

  • Greatly increase the available services in cities

  • Circumvent the microscopic lot allotment allowing large scale trade ventures, across cities and planets

  • Give new meaning to merchant skills...Management skill might decide what size of stores you could rent. Efficiency could affect the rent itself.

  • Give a real advantage over dabblers who only have the Business tree in Artisan

In player cities, those that progress further going from master merchant will be able to set up bazaar terminals in the cities, so I don't think people would want to rent their own merchants.

If you read my post again, you will note that I was talking about NON-PLAYER cities

Forget about that. There was once an option to put vendors in cities, which got axed shortly after release. I don't know if could also sell stuff, but they could at least shout advertisements for you.
