Thread: The Real Reason for Merchant Nerf
So why really would SOE even consider this idea? Let's face it there are at least 50 sensible ways to reduce item counts in the game (stacking items, larger stacks of resources, larger crate size etc. etc.). All these things would reduce item counts 10 fold if implemented AND make everyone happy since nobody likes to have to store 10 stacks of the same resource and have multiple houses to do it.
Therefore it's obvious that data base issues are NOT the reason behind this change. What are the reasons?
They get 80%+ of the server in an uproar (counting actual merchants and concerned customers). People are upset and frustrated.
Once they have stirred up the hornets nest, then THEN come back and say "Well we listened to our player base, and we have decided that we will have to find other ways to reduce data base issues because we don't want to inconvience so many wonderful players"
This does 2 things.
1. Everyone that is now hopping mad, will breath a sigh of relief and think "YES!! SOE does care about us!.. They DO listen to us". It's such a blatant manipulation of us that is disgusts me.
2. Many many people are upset about the delay of the combat changes and GCW fixes (not to mention 100 other things that are broken or bugged in this game). This merchant "pretend" change is spit out and those combat changes and GCW fixes don't seem all that important at the moment. We have something MORE devasting about to happen (supposedly). This gives SOE breathing room for the combat changes. And again, once SOE tells us this was all just a "thought, but we changed out minds because we didn't want to hurt the gameplay of soooo many loyal customers", everyone thinks SOE is wonderful and not so quick to pester them about the many broken things we do now.
I for one, don't like to be manipulated, and I truly believe that's what this whole "proposal" is based on.
As I stated above, and as anyone with 2 working brain cells have already mentioned, there are a ton of ways to reduce data base size in this game WITHOUT having to ruin (nerf) game play. In fact most of the ways they can reduce data base size would INCREASE our game play and our fun.
Think about it

The official "Merchant Vendor Items List" thread is now up to 34 pages with 99.5% of the posters against this proposed change and many of them threatening to quit their accounts over it.
Actually - it's not so much threatening as stating the fact they can't exist if this, or anything remotely similar goes thru.
While it's common on message boards to threaten to quit over changes, most players don't - the exception to that rule is the crafting community.
As a whole - folks that like the crafting playstyle are the most forgiving and flexible of any userbase (that's been true of every MMO I've ever played - several over many years). They adjust as best they can, may grumble, may complain, often suggest better solutions - but if at all possible - cope if they can.
When you have the crafting segment of your population throwing up their hands in mass disgust, you just screwed the pooch. When your game has a PC driven economy and crafters as a foundation (vs. an afterthought like many others) you've just jerked out the foundation of your game.

My only hope is that you are right. While this tactic is low and tasteless, I could deal with that a lot better than if this change was implemented.
