Ok, we all know that Doc's guide is pretty much the Merchant Bible™ but people still frequently ask lots of questions that, while covered in the guide, might benefit from a single source of "quick" information so that it isn't necessary to read the entire document to find an answer.

What I'd like to do is compile a list of questions that people always seem to ask before they have "read the stickies."

This FAQ would give a brief answer and then point to Doc's guide for more in-depth information.

That way the FAQ would work as a complement to the guide rather than a replacement for it.

Doing it this way will allow for easy additions of things that may have changed (has anything changed?) since the guide was written "a long time ago..."

So naturally your first question is, "How can I participate in this wonderful project, Elyssa?"

Well, I'm glad you asked.
What I'd like is for you to tell me what questions you think should be on this list.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel here, I just want a single post that people can read for a "short answer" to their question.
If that short answer (even if it's just yes or no) isn't enough for them, then they should read Doc's guide for a more in-depth answer.

So post 'em here and then I'll compile the whole mess into a FAQ that can be put on display for all the world to see.
I'll even use it to incorporate that "useful links" thing I tried to do a while ago,

Here are my suggestions:

1) How do I get merchant XP?
- You get 150 xp per hour per vendor, if it has maintenance paid and items for sale on it. You also get 50 xp when someone pays the entrance fee on your building (if you set one), and 50 xp when someone checks what's on your vendor (limit once per person per 10 minutes). You don't get xp for sales. You don't get xp for sales on the bazaar. You don't get more xp for more expensive items.

2) Where are the merchant trainers?
- Allakhazam's Merchant Trainer List

3) If I drop my merchant skills, what happens to my vendors?
- You can't use vendors that you don't have skills for. After a while, they get deleted. Here's a link to a thread with more info on vendor deletion.

4) Can I let someone else list stuff on my vendor?
- No.

5) How many items am I allowed to have on my vendor?
- (copy from or link to the appropriate thread)

6) Is this per vendor or total?
- Total.

7) Do items in backpacks count against the total?
- Yes, but the backpacks themselves don't, if they have items in them.

8) Why doesn't my vendor show up on the planetary map?
- You can advertise your vendor on the bazaar vendor listings through the radial menu on the vendor. If you have advertising 3, then you can also list it on the planetary and overhead map. This is also on the radial menu for the vendor once you have advertising 3.

9) Why can't I use my spambot?
- You need the advertising 4 skill, and a droid with the barker droid module installed. The commands to use a spambot are in its radial menu.

10) If I drop the ability to clothe my vendor, will my vendors drop the clothes I put on them?
- No. Naked vendors only exist from time to time, and SOE usually clothes them pretty quickly. Your vendors won't (currently) lose their clothes if you drop the skill.

11) If I drop merchant, can I keep my merchant tent?
- Yes. They may change this in the future though.

12) How do I get color and multiple lines in my shop sign?
- Ani's guide to multi-line and colored signes.

13) What's the cap on merchant xp?
- 80k if you have a tier 4 merchant skill.

14) Where can I find a merchant macro?
- Your friends can run a macro that uses your vendor every 10 minutes to get you 50 xp per person per 10 minutes. Here's a link to one.

15) What happens to my vendors if I go on vacation?
- If you're gone long enough, they get deleted. Here's a link for more details.

16) Why do my items lose their descriptions?
- It's a bug. /bug it in-game.

17) What does the merchant buff do?
- It adds +20 to hiring. This does nothing for a master merchant, but give a better selection of vendors to lower level merchants.

18) If I ask one of these questions on the merchant forum, will someone eat me?
- Yes. Ani will eat you. If she's sleeping, then Pappi or Elyssa may snack on you for a while until Ani wakes up.

edit: added a question, some answers

1) What is a 12pt Merchant?

2) What are the caps on the access fees?

3) How does sales tax (in towns) affect my vendors? In my holomail, the item is sold with the sales tax, but do I get to keep the tax, or does my city? (in my opinion a good question of beginning merchants and old merchants alike )

- This is actually not answered anywhere in the merchant forum stickies. Instead, you have to go to the politician forum and read their faqs for i t. http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Politician&message.id=44511 however, according to their faq, the sales tax is currently bugged and does not deposit in the city treasury (so where does this extra payment go? The faq did not say.)

4) Who is Ani?

5) How does vendor search function? What skillbox do I need to attain this skill?

- Vendor Search is an option on all vendors that allows the merchant to display their items and prices on the global bazaar under the "vendor search" tab. You do not need any specific skillbox (as of yet) and any merchant/artisan that owns an operational vendor may select this function. It is automatically turned on when a vendor is initialized and the merchant must disable this function if he/she wishes to not display their items on the bazaar's "Vendor Search" tab. *WARNING* This is not the same thing as global advertising and this will NOT display your vendors on the overhead map. This function ONLY affects display on the bazaar tabs. For overhead advertising display of your vendors you need 3000 merchant.

Editted: Added #5 and answer. Seen it too many times since this little thread started to leave it out.
