those droids that spam for you, will it do this while youre offline or do you have to be online?
also do they spam til you shut them off or do they have a time limit (battery life) ?

You must be online. You cannot JTL Jump or go into space while you have it out or it will autostore

I beleive battery life is drained by walking your Dog, not making it bark. So set it in a nice stationary position instead of patrol.
and be kind, don't set it directly infront of entrances,
Try off to the side or in bank when you curb you Dog.

Help keep the poo to a minium.

battery life will be drained if you are near your droid. However, if you shuttle to another planet, your droid doesn't lose battery charge. Make sure not to 'travel' using JTL - buy a shuttle ticket and go that way. Then your spambot will keep spamming and won't drain any battery.
For some stupid reason, SOE has designed spambots to really only be useful if you're afk, since you can't use them with JTL. If you go offline or use JTL, your spambot will autostore. So I just set up my spambots in a busy place (patrolling or standing still is fine), shuttle to another planet, and run an afk macro while I'm at work or sleeping.
A good afk macro is this one: name the macro afk
/mood none;
/pause 300;
/macro afk;
