I have heard that they are making it to where if you do get rid of management.. vendors go *poof*.. don't know when they are implementing it thought. Personally.. I hate vendor poaching.

Well at the time I planted the NPC vendor I wasn't yet doing the smuggler thing. This is not a future considerations question. And as for "stealing" 16 skill points, that was never my intention. I only wanted to know if I will need to do the big swap-a-roo before I drop those skills. And as a sidenote to this whole thing ... I have yet to find any true merchants on my server. There are a few that serve thier guild and that seems to be about it. As it is now, the merchant profession has been horribly played out. There isn't an easy avenue for crafters and merchants to travel that will make both sides happy. I would much rather supply a merchant with my goods than have the headache of running vendors on top of my factories, houses and numerous harvs. The "scouts honor" system currently in place stinks. Sure hope one of these publishes fixes the vendor issues and legitimizes the merchant prof again.

Why not just drop a Coke Machine if you know in the future that you will need to reclaim the skill? It would save you so much headache in the long run. That way we merchants know you are not trying to steal 16 skill points from the profession.

I appreciate that.

i am sure this has been said many times but heres my 2cr. as a master armorsmith i acquire tons of resources and other items to fill my inventory. for a while i had done a lot trade and goten 5 small houses on tat so thats 750 item storage plus what i had already with close to 1300 item storage i was stillfinding myself out of space. currently i have business III so that i may have my vendor. it's shear fear the reason i dont drop it b/c there is so much on my vendor i would be finished if i lost. if liquidated easily over 100mil in resources alone until they do something about storage business III is the best solution to the problem.
My vendor is not registerd its a big bulky ugly vendor but i could care less b/c it stores crap. nothing is priced to sell no harm no foul

All I have to say is that the merchant profession is the biggest waste of time in this entire game. the only profession I dislike more is politician -- and partly for the same reasons. I am trying to master it right now.. yes because of a holo, but also because it is just nice to be able to have a vendor to sell the items I collect while hunting/adventuring.
But, it is stupid to spend the same amount of points to get 1/10th the playability of any other profession. What do you get from master merchant? reduced bazaar fees? reduced vendor fees? ability to put your vendor on the map? like 6 vendors? some signs? BIG DEAL.
reduced bazaar fees are really kinda pointless, even with premium the fee is only 100 credits without any reduction, so any drop there really isn't going to be noticed. vendor fees reduced is nice, but it is only noticable when you are using a lot of vendors and right now I am stretching things out just to keep items of different types on three vendors, no need for any more, and those base fees just aren't that terrible to begin with. ability to put your vendor on the map? that is a decent ability - but something that you only use once per vendor. 6 vendors? too many unless you are setting vendors up for other people, which honestly isn't worth it because trust is hard in these games. and signs? nifty.. but fluff. And it is all one time set up stuff too. Once you get master merchant, you set things up.. and then you rarely use any of it ever again. That doesn't make a profession playable or fun to me.
Frankly if they removed this profession completely it wouldn't be the end of the world in my opinion. But if it has to stay around, it shouldn't take ANY skill points at all because it isnt a playable profession. you don't really get any fun from being a merchant. You can just sell items you make with other professions... and you can't even maximize that potential because a good portion of your skill points are tied up in merchant.
I guess the point of this ramble is that you shouldn't complain about people mastering merchant to get the rewards from it (which is really the only reason to do it... hologrinding merchant sucks and I wouldnt be doing it if I didnt want to dress my vendors.. especially since now you can't master it in 45 minutes like it could be done a few months ago..).. and then need to drop it to go on to something fun. because this isn't a "fun" profession.. and in a GAME that you play for FUN... every profession should be about enjoyment.

as far as I know and have seen from friends... the only things you lose when dropping merchant, are the reduced fees, the ability to place/initialize vendors, register on the planetary map, and change your sign. but anything you have set up prior to dropping it, stays as it is. and you can still stock your vendors that are already set up. which is why a lot of people master merchant, get set up in a location, and then drop it so that they can put their skill points into a profession that actually allows you to do things with it.
another way to put what is wrong with merchant into words... is that it is a very passive profession. If you basically like to set things up and never really have to bother with it ever again -- regardless if you keep master merchant or not -- merchant is the profession for you. you can stock your vendors and go play another game while you wait on experience.. or.. once you master merchant, you can keep the points tied up in it and do nothing at all with it. Lots of fun. and really worth those 92 skill points. lol.
