Thread: Merchant revamp shows flaw in Skill Points System

The recent changes in Merchant highlights a fundamental problem with the skill points systems. I myself started SWG primarily to be a fighter. I’ve always played first person shooters of one type or another. However after doing Merchant for my first Holo and entertainer for my second, I became more interested in the other aspects of the game. I don’t want to give up my fighting skills to play around with the crafting professions and don’t like the fact my vendors will soon be useless. As a result I will stop collecting the resources I currently sell to Artisans.

The problem with the skill points system is you have to be either an Uber Fighter or an Uber Crafter in order to be competitive in SWG. You end, up as I do, in putting all your skill points towards your chosen profession leave you little or nothing in skill points left to play around with.

My proposal would be to:
Give us an extra 100 Skill Points
Have 100 Skill Points set aside specifically for Fighting and Crafting.
The remaining point would be open to place were you want.

What this would do is allow you to still have 250 points towards your chosen Professions and still have 100 points in the other major profession. This would allow crafters to have decent fighting skills and fighters to have some crafting skills. Personally it would allow me to maintain my fighting skills, keep my vendors, and survey for resources. This will also be valuable in the future Jedi Missions if it ends up being another profession grind.

Thats not a flaw, its called balance :-)

I would love to get some skillpoints too, but not matter how much time I spent inhow to legitimate such a request, I havent find any arguments that can be threated as "valid" :-)

You can actually PvE pretty well and still do other things with one master combat class. The problem arises when you try to PvPin a world filled with streamlined characters supported by multiple accounts. 250 is plenty of points. You just need to make the hard choices most of everyone else makes, play on other servers to experience the other parts of the game or get another account.

It seems like defensive stacking may have an upcoming nerf, so maybe the single combat profession master will be more viable in the future.

I'm an elite crafter and an Elite combat profession and I do fine.

And I don't have a second account.

It's called making a choice. You selected your skill points and at any time you can change them. While I'll agree with the contention that in order to be competitive you are going to have to select the crafter or combat playstyle there is an opportunity to do both but you'll find that you're some what marginal as a crafter/fighter. There does need to be some improvement to the middle ground.

Auction Houses: Convenience is a privilege not a right. There definately could be some improvements to the way items are listed, like unregistering unstocked vendors. Certain people have a play style which makes the merchant class enjoyable. The rank and file may not like having to walk to some ones vendor but that is the price you pay for accomodating crafter/merchant players. Just a counterpoint to your argument. Craftes are not to thrilled with loot drops but we understand that you want something as a reward for beating that mob. So we'll deal with your loot and you can deal with walking to the vendor.

Given the choice between style over substance. I'll take a sandwich.

Though I wistfully sit around sometimes thinking what I could do with 50 extra skill points (being Master Politician and Master Doc leaves about nil for combat)- that is why I have a 2nd account which is a combat character. (sometimes I really need to go kill things) I realize that even though "I" would like them I would need others in community less.

So though at times I don't like the 250 skill point limit - I wouldn't consider it a design flaw.

It's a multi-player game - they expect us to interact with others and work together.

The skill point system is fine. You need to make a choice as to what you want to excel at, can't bethe bestat everything..

Cant have your cake and eat it

Cant please all of the people all of the time

Even your suggestion went ahead, how long till your 'need' another 100 skill points.

This is like people have suggested, the point limit to introduce balance and also variety.

Heres my suggestion

dont like it?

dont play!

You can still have an Elite combat prof, Elite Crafting prof and still have a vendor or 2.

To get to the defence stacking or multiple crafting profs, obviously you need to drop the other. I don't think that is a big deal though. The limit has to be somewhere. I think the current limit is fairly decent. I would love a few extra points, but I can deal with the current levels. Your other option is to get a second account.

well the solution for most is to buy another account or 2 or more, perhaps this was done on purpose because it obviously makes alot or peopeget alts, or perhaps it was just unintentional, then later the devs found out it was bringing them in more money, so now they like it, either way its about the money for them, to keep us just happy enough to not all mass quit, so this way they can make more profit with just the minimal needed work and effort, sounds very american, the word lazy

Well what you want is a game that uses "auction houses"

Most other MMMOG's in design or live have a "bazzar system" with no limits.

Crafters list their goods.

Combat characters list their loot.

Players buy the goods they need from one location.

What you really want instead of more skill points is a better designed game.

Having players travel around for hours searching for the items they need to play the game doesnt make sense.

Thats why you wont see a "Merchant class" in future MMMOG and instead see an auction house.

This isn't a flaw. Its this way for a reason: to balance out the difference between combat and crafter/merchants.

You can't have it all.

Its time for you to make a choice.

Why is a Second Account not considered an Exploit?

Your doubling your advantable over other players.

Your taking advantage of the developers gearing the game towards players helping player.

Because you are now paying double, and money coming in by way of more active accounts is king.

And unless you have 2 computers worthy to play the game, or edit that file to open multiple instances of the game how does it matter? You can still only sit at one computer, and operate one toon at a time.

Besides, if you have 2 accounts, they don't consider 1 person owning 2 accounts 1 person. That's considered 2 for the numbers, and when they post " this is how many people play SWG currently " it's off of active accounts regardless of how many that one person owns.

And yes, it is a MMORPG. Interaction is encouraged. If you don't like to interact, and own an account for all aspects of the game so you can do everything yourself without anyone's assistance, then why play to begin with?
