TH a while back asked for 10 questions from every professions. A situation which proved difficult to follow through on because it was so darned many questions when all was said and done. So he's switched formats and will be asking only haf of the Correspondents for a question every other week. Last week I passed along the same #1 question we had up previously, because it still fit in well with the latest polling for Medic Issues. You can find THs full response at:

Here is the specific response for Medics:

Medic: What are higher rated crafting stations and tools supposed to do for you, exactly? (Assuming they are even working, of course.) and how do droid crafting stations relate to the standalone stations, since we cannot see any kind of rating numbers on droids?

The effectiveness rating on crafting tools and stations influences the chance of success or failure during the assembly and experimentation stages. As far as the droid itself, it has a neutral relationship (does not effect) on the crafting process.

Heh. The way he words it, it does not mean the droid crafing module has a "neutral" relationship. Or am I being too picky?

Ah I see he is more elaborate in his preface.

Nice. Think we already suspected droids don't really have an affect either way but nice to know this is as intended.

Well, there had been some indications taht droid modules actually worked better than a top en station. And certainly tehre were planty of tests done more than a few months back which suggested that negative rated tools actually performed better than their positive rated counterparts (although we did not fully understand the flat Crit Fail rate at that time, either, so that MAY have skewed the numbers improperly.) Not to mention we weren;t the only ones to ask that question, since it was also asked by the Architect Corre. Obviously it is a common crafting issue that suggests from teh player side of things that we think maybe it really isn;t working as intended because we are seeimg some fairly anomolous results.

But the Devs appear to think it's all wroking fine. So if anyone thinks that is not that case running some good experimentation test of at least 100 data points would certainly help to provide some convinving objective evidence to show what so many have considered to be a problem from subjective evidence.

You sound a bit like traigus there... Not bashing just think it's funny.

Personally I never really noticed that much of a difference between good and bad tools or stations though, certainly not since last publish- I rarely fail now. I wonder if the ratings do not matter much on stations for masters now, since the reduced failure rate was put in.

No I don't! He sounds like me.

I have always wonderd if the flat crit fail rate was scewing the numbers when folks were doing the testing before. ANd that may have been the whole problem right there. Got me. I also haven;t done much crafting myself at all in the past month or two so I'm not really one to talk when it comes to fail rates and such ofter the past couple of publishes.

It ain't working the critical fails were like 12%

No, no. I think that's part of the problem is folks looking at crit fails. I don't think these things affect crit fail rates and I think that MIGHT have ckewed the figures and expectations a little. Look at your figures again but completely ignor the Crit Fial rate. Only look at all of the other results and see if a higher rated setup helped out for those. Just remember to ignore crit fail rate. After all, beforePublish 7 (I think it was 7) Crit Fail was a flat rate no matter what your skill was, now it is supposed to scale as you approach Master, but they didn't tell us if they used a skill level as their check, in which case things like stations and skill tapes should affect that rate, or if they are just checking based on boxes ore skill points used or what. At any rate pre Puub 7 (or was it 8?)results must be viewed keeping in mind that Crit Fail used to be a flat rate no matter what your skill or tools you used.

I am using a 12.93 tool and 12.5 crafting station... yeah, I haven't upgraded since september... but I average good successes. Probably why I never bothered to upgrade... I always have resources, if I don't get the result I want, I will just start again till I get near what I want. Note also that my crafting of late has all be done inside our city, which is a research center. I also craft a lot of non-advanced components too, which probably helps due to the low complexity.

I've only had 2 crit fails in the last week, which I find odd, because on my armoursmith i get about a 33% crit fail rate.
