Medic Archive

I am relatively new to the game and have been looking at templates for swordsman and they recommend 2040 medic or higher. I have been looking at this and was wondering if it was neccessary, I can't really find the benefit of it. It seems like novice medic would be all that I ever needed for healing myself. Any help is appreciated.
