Will any type of droid actually be able to actively heal you or your group members?

No. Droids only give you the ability to heal wounds away from camps/med centers. They can not actually use medicines on people for you. You have to do the healing yourself, the droid just gives a bonus (depending on quality of med module) plus the ability to heal wounds where you normally couldn't heal them.
