Thread: Advice for New Medics
This method seemed to work well for me when starting out my medic character, so I thought I'd pass it along.
The most important thing you need to remember as a novice medic is that it will be very hard to be self-sufficient with just your medic skills. The real XP comes from using medpacks, not /tend, to heal people, and to get medpacks you're going to need resources to make them. Don't rely on medical foraging, you'll get nowhere with it. Scout and Artisan skills compliment medics very well, with these you can grab enough resources through harvesting and surveying to make medpacks. Another option you could try if you don't want to do this is run delivery missions and buy resources off the bazaar to use.
Make getting Organic Chemistry I a toppriority when you're starting out, because it lets you create Health and Action woundpacks. This will let you heal people's wounds a LOT faster and without taking wounds yourself. Also, when doing this, try and find a medical center in a populated city where lots of people will be coming to. This way you won't find yourself hanging around waiting for patients to show up.
Make friends with your patients and be social, especially with people who can provide you with resources. I was lucky enough to have someone set up a flora farm and moisture evaporator for me,with mepitching in a little money to him for maintenance now and then. If you can get someone to supply you, you'll never have a resource shortage, and these people will also usually come to you first if they need healing.
Another good and often overlooked way to gain experience is to go out into the field with hunting parties. Combat characters often take lots of damage while doing missions, and through the eyes of a medic that's great. Damage = xp. Make yourself a hefty supply of stims and follow a group of 3-4 characters around healing them, and your experience will fly up. It's also more fun than sitting around in medical centers all the time.
Last but not least, sadly, don't expect to make enough money to sustain your character from tips alone. Most times people you heal won't tip at all or won't give enough to make any real difference. Running two deliveries to another city and two back will oftentimes make as much money as a whole night's worth of healing. If you are lucky enough to get someone to supply you with resources, or had the artisan skills to set some harvesters up yourself, you could also consider selling resources on the bazaar too.
I hope this helps to get people started. Happy healing!
I just wanted to add a couple of thoughts. If you want to be a self sufficient Medic, I suggest that you start your character as an Artisan and then pick-up Medic when you enter the game. This way you will get all the survey tools you will need to gather your own resources. Just remember to migrate some of your stats in the tutorial from action to mind.
As far as gaining medical exp, I just gave the following advice in another thread: The best way to make medical exp, imho, is to partner up with another person and have them tank for you. Pick a mob that takes a few minutes for this person to "solo" and just stand back and keep them healed. You both will make excellent exp: weapon/combat exp for them and medical exp for you. Doing it this way is alot less hectic than being in a large hunting group and alot less boring than sitting around a med center waiting on people to come to you. Best of luck
