Hi,
Im a new medic, and Im wondering about droids and what are the options.

I want an R2 unit to use as a med droid. Is that possible or do I have to use the surgical droid? Ive never had a droid so Im not sure how it works.

You can use whatever droid, ive got a probot droid with a medical unit in it.

Yeah, any droid chassis should be able to support a medical chip, and if you want better results when using it, find a high as level med chip (max level 6 = 1.10 times the default (med center) healing power) as you can...which involves finding a Master DE or one near it as well I think.
