I have 7 points left over after using my template(Master Pistoleer, Master Medic+some other stuff).

If I was only going to train up to Novice what wouldbe more useful, Doctor or CM?

why because CM will start u on a whole new set of skills. while novice doctor builds on medic skills for the most part...

the abilty to use wound C and buffis >>>> then the ability to use ranged A.

Nothing in the CM profession builds on medic skills, but 1/2 the lines in the doctor tree, med use and experimentation do...

I have to agree, pistoleer / doctor go very well together.But thenI'm biased as that's what I am. As a novice doctor will will also be able to heal a couple of combat states like dizzy and intimidate (at least I think that it's those two states), which would be very useful in groups or solo.

In my opinion, Combat Medic would be a good choice if you're going a bit further up the tree once they fixpoisons and diseases. If all you have room for in your template is a novice level, than I think doctor is the much better fit.
