I'm looking for a droid so I can heal outside the clinics and camps, since it's faster levelling to heal wherever you can. I'm wondering what droids are preferred. I eventually want to go Doctor, so should I get a surgical droid now or wait and get something cheaper? What do you recommend?

Well.... It's really upto you.
I like R3 droids because they can hold the most modules and therefore the most versitile droids. I also like the R4 Droid because they aren't used that much.
You do not need a surgical droid to heal outside the med center, merely a medical capable droid. Look for one with 110 Medical rating.

In addition to having medical capability, you may also want to invest in a droid that has a personal food/chemical crafting station.
You should also know that even with a droid, you cannot heal wounds in certain buildings. Personally, the only time I've been able to heal wounds inside a building was in the medical center.

I'm a DE, so here's a quick rundown on my "Ultimate Doctor's R2 droid." Just to let you know some of what's available.
"Warryyr's Ultimate Doctor's R2 Droid"
110 Med rating Droid Medical Module (110% of the healing rating of a Medical Center) - to heal anywhere you like (where allowed)
10 Item Storage space (to store some buffpacks or stims, batteries, or resources, whatever you like)
Food/Chemical Crafting Station (to craft meds anywhere you like)
Level 6 Droid Data Module (lets you store up to 250 schematics inside the droid's datapad - schematics ONLY)
Stimpack Dispenser Module (with Pharmacology 4, you can load Stim A's into the droid. Group members get healing from the droid with the /requeststimpack command in case you're healing someone else and it's an emergency)
Handy things to know:
Battery life doesn't affect using the Item storage or the Data storage, or the Food/Chem Crafting Station. The droid can be at 0% power and those will still work fine.
Battery power IS required for healing/buffing. Don't forget the batteries - they now last for about 4 hours of use.
Any droid can be medical-enabled. Not just surgical droids. If it can hold a module, it can be a medical droid. Popular choices are R2's and R3's because they can hold the most modules (functions).

It's true that you can't heal wounds inside some NPC city buildings, except the medical center. However, I've been able to heal wounds in every player city structure I've attempted it, including the cantina.

Waryyr, you bring up an important point that many new medics and doctors seem to have trouble with. I just want to underline it.
A Droid has modules and a chassis. The modules decide what the droid can do, and how well it can do it. The chassis defines what the droid looks like, and how many modules it can hold.
A 'Surgical Droid' is a chassis. A 'Medical Droid' is a non-specific term used generally for droids with a medical module. These Medical Droids often also have crafting stations and storage.
Some people like using the surgical chassis for their medical droid for roleplaying reasons, I like R-type droids better, because my character is rather short, and a huminoid droid looks out of place when it's taller than me. My friend the CM has a MSE medical droid (the annoying small mouse-like droids). Doesn't look like much, but works just as well as my R2 for a lot less money.
Again: Surgical = chassis, and chassis does not mean function.

Yep all player city structures are as good as a hospital these days! Its on the doc list of things to fix, mainly so that more of an emphasis is put on actually using a hospital

As a fellow DE, I'll confirm the above as true.
The level 6 medical module is what is important. Advanced R3 droids hold 6 modules of any type, making it the high-end droid of choice.
The only reason people seem to get different chassis is so that they can tell at a glance what the droid is for. A Surgical Droid with a Level 6 medical module and Level 6 storage module is easy to pick out on a crowded datapad. If you are a multiple droid owner, this is a good way to go since you can have a crafting droid with the various crafting stations you need.
Most DE's will work with you to design the droid you need, so don't be afraid to ask him/her/it.
