I am thinking about respecing to medic...
I am master tailor, master merchant with 0040 in dancing and no xp left at all (due to fsxp branches).
I have no clue how to be a medic or how to respec.
Any help would be appreciated before I mess something up.

You can only take respec points out of a combat profession (or medic or scout) and not tailor or merchant.

About the respec:
You get a certain amount of Standard; Novice; and Elite "respec points". These transfer on a 1 to 1 basis.
For example:
A master Artisan would be able to completely respec to a master Medic, as Artisan and Medic both take Standard respec points.
Don't worry about "messing up"; the respec is only set after you click "OK" and then confirm the respec. You can move skills around and not confirm it; like a character builder.
You can respec once every 12 Hours, for 3 weeks (since that avatar has logged in post-CU)

Now you can... They just added crafting professions (including merchant) to the respec

Apparently, Elite respec points can be converted to Standard points, but not vice-versa. I'm not too sure on this though, so don't quote me on it.

Yes you can... it just takes MORE standard points to equal an elite point..
I don't know the exact amount, but you can do that... just as elite can be put into standard, you get more standard points from an elite...
I know this cuz i tested moving my artisan to med/doctor to see how it worked out... I ran out of elite respec points, so when i tried to do another elite box, it took the points from my standard points pool. (i forget how much... but you can play with it pretty easily and not make it permanent)..
HTH.
