Thread: Hats off to the true medics: a testament from a holocron whore
I have a Novice Medic on Starstrider that doesn'tdo too bad in tips.
I ran delivery missions to buy resources (6k for a crate of 1000 organic and 1000 inorganic), then just spent the rest of the time in the med center healing. I get enough tips to cover components, with a little left over. I've saved up enough to pick myself up a surgical droid and I'm quickly on my way to Master Medic and eventually Doctor.
I can say this though, being a medic is alot like being an entertainer. Talk to your patient, compliment their wounds if they're realbad, ask them how things are going, be social and outgoing. You'll find you get tipped more if you make the stay in the med center (which can be pretty long if you're still novice) seem a little bit shorter, and much more enjoyable.
Just don't expect a tip everytime, I can go hours without a tip, or I can make 10k in 30 minutes.
I am working my way up to master medic, and one afternoon I had a rather discouraging experience.
I was getting ready to solo on 2 missions outside of Tyrena, and as I left town I noticed this one person getting the snot beaten out of him by meatlumps. I ran over and in the course of his battle, healed him as required tokeep him from getting Incapped and possibly even DB'd. When he killed the last one, he never said a word, not a thank you, not a tip, nothing. Just turned and headed into town. I didn't expect reimbursement, necessarily; I saw someone in trouble, and provided aid while still letting them get the XP they needed. I could have cleaned the lumps off of him in really short order, but that wouldn't have benefitted anyone to any real extent.
But how sad is that; people can't even say thank you in this game, let alone part with some credits to help defray costs of patching people up.
I've had this happen several times too. Since then I've been very leery about rescuing people, unless they are in serious trouble and/or ask for help.
However, it's also good to ask first, since some people are "trying" to die for one reason or another (lazy people who can't walk 500m to a town..geesh..come to mind).
I think the general attitude has changed quite a bit since the early days. I could get by on tips, but made my living from selling resources while climbing up the Medic and Doc trees. These days, I rarely see tips, although i don't camp the medcenter anymore, asI don't want to hog the fun as an MD. I don't get tips these days from healing people I see while I have a droid out, even when I heal major wounds in one shot, or even entire HAM bars. I get a "ty" and that's about it.
Now, as an MD, my bread and butter (other than resources) is buffing. I charge 5-6k for a set andnever have any complaints about the cost. Frequently I get massive tips above and beyond what I ask, and that's great.
But anyone thinking a Medic or Novice Doc can make a living at this profession without playing the sales or resources end of this biz is crazy.

Medics, unite!!!
One post out of all these in particular strikes me as being very true....the folks who get healed and never say even a cursory Thank you, or "ty". I like it when I am tipped, I think everyone does. But, since so many of the missions for us lowly Medics, Scouts, Marksmen, etc.are small in the number of credits that they pay out, I understand not getting much in the way of tips. With the poorer economy since the few last patches, lots of the entertainers have been leaving the game or switching professions, because they, too, weren't getting tipped.
Say thank you when you are tipped, be friendly to your patients, and ask the developers for more things we can SELL and DO!!! That is what I think we should focus on now. Oh, and if you see another Medic in game who is just starting out, give them some of your resources if you can spare them....good kharma is a beautiful thing!
See you on Tarquinas server,

Hmm last night on a whim i picked up medic. I must say i thought the prof was going to be totaly boring. I like the combat side of things marksman 4/4/1/3 scout 4/3/3/4 going rifleman. now medic 1/0/1/1. I enjoy the job. I find it gratifying. Not to mention most of my play since beta has been solo. I have no house and have no close friends on the server. In fact I know no one in RL that plays the game. So its pretty lonely for me. Needless to say. Last night was the longest i've stayed in a city since the release. I talked to people, I got to know some. I learned new things about the game. and to top it all off i walked out of the medic center 2350 credits richer than when i walked in. With my scout exp i harvested lots of meat before i took the profession and it was good stuff too. PE 800 or more OQ 700 or more some worse. and then i bought 250 units of inorganic chemicals. I made a whole bunch of stim As action packs As and health pack As. I healed a goon number of people. When i was tired of doing that I went out of town to camp. The thought of actualy staying in a city when i log out scares me.
I always tip people if i have the cash. (im not a money grinder. I've never had more than 20k in my bank) I was actualy supprised when i was tiped though. I knew only a few people tipped at all but with the novice doctors, combat medics, and master medics that were at the med center I thought that me a novice medic would get beat out and not get the chance to heal for exp. I'm glade the higher ups in a prof are nice to the new guys and the people appreciate what the medics do no mater what skill lvl they are. I definatly have a new respect for the medic proffessions.
I have some basic medic skills, which I have been giving up as I've been taking on more combat skills. I spent some time healing people in the med center last night. I don't really care whether I receive a tip or not, but it does bother me if someonewon't take the time to say thank you.
I doubt any combat or artisan people will read this but here it goes..... If you are, have you ever ran a mission for free or sold a weapon/armor/creature etc. no you don't and you get xp from it too just as a medic does. resources are not free and we pay alot to get meds to heal you. please realize that only 1 out of 5 if that actually tip! and if a health wound pack costs 500 cr and we get 15 heals out of it well you get the picture. plz tip anything possible even like 20cr in the med center and also if someone goes beyond their call of duty on a squill mission tip them or at least harvest bone or something good to give to them, when you are a noob every little bit helps. thank you.
ps i don't know about others but i have noticed that people that walk into a med center and demand to be healed are the same ones that leave, never say thanks and never tip. sometimes i like to call them you like yell "X didn't tip, thanks for being a cheap skate" it makes em feel bad, and hopefully will change their minds if all meds do it .
Just a quick thought on this...
I'm on FarStar, so maybe the fact that it's a new server helps, but...
I find when I RP in a hospital, people tip me far more often, and far better. That's the value-added service I give... not just the application of some not-very-good wound packs (!!), but the feeling that you've actually come to the hospital for some medical attention.
I've not been at this long, but people really seem to enjoy it, and I end up having a far better time, too.
To add my two cents. I have been an above average Medic for a while. The wonderful Holocron last night told me to master Artesian so I was so close to master Medic that I finished that just to be safe.
Anyway, during my stints there were times I would heal people and their pets and not even receive a THANK YOU!
Now, I usually heal people out of the goodness of my dumb ol' heart and never expect a tip. But, to not even get a Thank You might as well be a slap in the face.
The best one so far was this idiot who kept telling me saying he still had wounds that needed healing. I was helping others and I told him to be patient. Once I got to him and finished up he just ran off. I put him on my list and will never heal him again. I dont forget...
Thanks for the thread...

Hmmmm... I'm gonna consider blacklisting people that don't say 'thank you', heh.
I'm brand new to SWG and my character is a Medic, future doctor. I am surprised by how few people say 'thank you' orlet alonetip. What few tips I do recieve go directly to buying resources to make new meds. The only other thing I've bought is a 200cr rifle. I'm still in my **edit** newb clothes for pete's sake! But usually, just as my mood starts to drop due to inconsiderate people, a generous/talkative/etc person comes along, and makes it better again.
If you see Kasur in the Bestine med center, say 'hi', and if I heal you, a 'thank you' wouldn't hurt either, ![]()
