Thread: Imperial pilots....How do rebel npc's fly against you?

I'm just wonder since i"m not an imp pilot....what formations do the rebel npc's fly against you guys? Do they fly like imp npc's do against rebs?

As a rebel, when I enter battle vs imp ships, first lets say it's 6 ships.....we fly at each other....once they pass me, they break off into 3 groups and head in 3 different directions.......one group will make a shorter turn and try and come up behind me....the second group will make a slightly longer turn (I refer to it as a medium length turn).......then the third group will make a longer turn......

So what happens is the first group making the short turn flys at me (from behind if I"m not jousting)....they fire and as they pass, the second group is already on their attack run...by the time they pass, the third group is just coming in on their attack run.....

Now I did some experimenting with this....I put on my emergency shields (so they don't kill me ) and then I came to a full stop.....used my cockpit camera and third person camera along with the radar.....I noticed that the imp npc ships do this all the time, no matter how many in their wing...if it's 9, then they break off into 3's.....and so on. Pirate ships don't seem to do this...I haven't found a pattern like this with pirates..although I didn't check because they pose no threat to me like imps do in groups.

Each time, thier attack runs are the same.....Now I found out how to counter this (basically break up the groups)....but I was just wondering if the rebel npc ships fly in similar patterns or do they have their own attack formations? Since pirates don't seem to do the same thing....is this just exculsive to the rebs and imps or just the imps.

well, as a smuggler alliance pilot, and in a guild where I help alot of imperial pilots. Ive fought about every faction.

Imperial and Rebel NPCs do just what the orignal poster says

Crime factions like Hutts, Valiarians, Nyms, and Black Sun, usally dont use squad tactics, they normaly just try to kill you with everyone gunning at you.

Police Like factions ( Corsec, RSF ) seem to act like a crime faction on lower teirs, and on higher teirs do the tactical things like the rebels and imperials.

I've had a few bad experiences with flight tactics when I was skilling up to Ace. I'd get some missions where I had to destroy Imperial NPCs, and 3 out of 10 times there would be one or two TIEs who I'd hit once, then they'd fly off... and not come back. They'd fly 3k, then 5k, 8k, 10k away and I couldn't catch them because I was slower. So I'd simply finish off the rest of the TIEs and wait for the last one to come back. Usually about ten minutes later it would finally decide to turn around (after over 25k meters away) and come back. It always pissed me off... though I did concider that pilot to be the "chicken" of the fleet.

Anyhow, it may just be me... but it seems NPCs use different tactics depending on their tier...

Fockers as in a mis-spelt naughty word or Fokker's as in a plane employed by the Germans during wartime?

Exactly. Those bombers will launch missiles at you while you're busying engaging the fighters.

The Y-wings and B-wings fly separate from the fighters.

The first target you engage (usually an A-wing cause they're 75% of the enemy forces) Always breaks away and zooms out so the rest can settle on your '6'.

The A-wings generally fly solo, using a hit-n-run.

The X-wings tend to fly in formations more often, usually 2 or 3 ships.

The Z-95's don't really exist beyond tier 1, I think I only saw them in one mission after that.

The B-wings usually manuaver solo, making wide slow turns and poping off missles as you tangle with the fighters.

The Y-wings usually fly in loose groups of 2, they tend to use fewer missles than the B-wings and have a very distinctive gun sound when they shoot at you.

The X-wings tend to be very easy targets as they fly very predictable, stable manuevers when your close in on them.

The A-wings have the most sporatic, unpredictable, sharp, jerky manuevering when your in close that I've ever seen and they constantly change speed as well.

The Y-wings, and B-wings play an "I can fly slower than you" game when you get close on them, they hit the brakes and turn on a dime while you zoom right past. In a fighter (interceptor/advanced etc.) you simply can't slow down enough to prevent overshooting without falling below your turning speed and becoming a slow sitting duck yourself. Yes, thats right they outmanuever fighters at thier speed so you have to do hit-n-runs.

When the A-wings are flying in formation they turn much slower and change speed less often, untill you wipe out thier wingman then they revert to solo manuevers.

That's gotta be the biggest pain since the changes, the constant speed changes that they all make now.

I usually just keep constantly mashing "match speed" every second once I'm in behind them, it's the only way to keep from overshooting or "jousting".

I have noticed Black Sun squadrons flying like this in the duty missions. The fighters go one way, and the bombers try to get behind you as you're busy with the fighters.
