Thread: Why is it so hard to hit?

I am a Rebel Pilot 1111 and I use an Y-wing.

When I am fighting a ship, I lock on to my target so the green target indicator shows up.

But I always fire pefectly in the center of the indicator, and still its very very rare to hit the enemy. Only when I am in front of him or behind him, I keep hitting him. But when attacking from side or above (when the green target indicator is quite a bit in front of the enemy) I just almost never hit, and I shoot perfectly in the middle of the target indicator.

Like that it can take 15 minutes to take down a Tie fighter

What do I do wrong?

The "lead indicator" isn't accurate. If you shoot "in the middle" of the lead indicator, your shots will either pass a little behind or a little in front of the target.

It's really more of a suggestion than anything else, and it's useful for predicting manuvers. That's it.

I usually fire just behind the dot in the middle of the lead indicator. Just keep practicing, and you'll get the feel for when your shots will hit based on the lead indicator.

You're going to have to get accustomed to fighting different types of ships and learn your weapons. Personally, I generally fire a little behind the indicator, but when fighting really agile ships, like the A-wing, I fire a little in front. It's pretty much guess and check though, and it will come with time.

Well for some reason when JTL went live, the lead indicator became inaccurate...in beta, as long as you had your cursor right on the lead indicator, you would hit the ship no matter it's speed, angle or trajectory.....

In live though, about 95% of ships can be hit by aiming about a quarter of an inch behind the green lead indicator.....for faster ships, sometimes you have to aim where your reticle is half way on top of the green lead indicator.....but it all depends on the angle and speed of both your ship and the targeted ship....practice makes perfect...

Oh yeah, there is another difference in aim depending on what type of weapon your using....the weapons that shoot plasma like balls normally travel slower, fire slower and need about another quarter inch adjustment than normal laser weapons do.....the aim is different with each.

One thing I've found useful to get double hits is to equip one laser type weapon and 1 plasma ball type weapon and alternate firing them....since it's not easy keeping your reticle in the most accurate position for a long enough time for both types of weapons to hit, as you score a hit with the first shot and your losing the aim, the second shot will hit also simply because one weapon fires slower and takes longer to travel than the other one....the lasers travel faster than plasma....firing the laser first and if your losing your precise aim point, by firing the plasma right after the laser....the plasma will hit because you have slowly slipped into the plasma optimal firing spot......this is mainly effective when enemy ships have made that 180 degree turn at full speed and your almost shooting at them from the side or top....

Also keep in mind that the furter away a ship is from you, the closer to the green reticle you have to aim....the closer they get to you, the farther away from the reticle you have to aim...when they are right on top of you (like 5 -10m away), you must aim about a 1/2 inch in front of the ship no matter where the green reticle is.

THese tips may or may not work for you....you will have to adjust to using them....but you always gotta compensate during any kind of battle...if you don't then you need to be in a MP ship so you only have one task to worry about....no offense, but some people just aren't adept to multitasking.

Anyway, if I had to guess what my accuracy is when firing and shooting, I'd have to give myself about a 65% - 70% and that's only because tie fighters are so small and hard as hell to hit...if I fought pirates all the time, my hit ratio would be about 95%....hehe, they are hard as heck to miss.

***EDIT*** OK, I got more...LOL don't forget that the enemy's shield works like your own....they have front and back shields....this is why when you see their shielding get to 50%, you sometimes start hitting their armor and systems....that's because you've stripped away either front or back shields and as long as you continue to hit them in the same spot....you'll kill them quicker.....this means if you have been chasing a ship and shooting it from behind and it's down to 50% shields.....then you start jousting with it......you'll have to take down the front shiedls then, before you can start hitting the systems.....so in this case it's better to continue chasing it so you can kill it faster by not having to chew through some more sheilding which switching to joust mode means.

Just remember 50% shield and 50% armor on a target means you will hit their systems next as long as you hit the side of the ship that has the shielding down...You'll know this simply by knowing where your firing at your target.....also, you can be behind a target and still hit it in the front...you just gotta lead your shots so they fly into them...it won't be full damage but it works so as long as your not directly behind it or withing a 20 degree angle behind it...wish I had pics to show what I mean, it might be easier to understand that way.

It has been my experience that that target lead assumes that both your ship and the target ship are moving at maximum velocity. I say this because I find the target lead to be far more accurate when fighting against faster ships (that slow down less to corner) as well as when I fly in an A-Wing (which, again corners at a much higher speed). I also fly a Y-Wing (Longprobe) against Tier IV and V ships. As a general rule of thumb, you want your actual crosshairs to be anywhere from 1/2 to 1 "crosshair width" away from the lead, between the lead and the target ship. This distance varies depending on speed and on angle. When cornering on an angle, I find that I need to adjust less.

But in a slower ship, they are always going to be wrong. That's just the reality of the situation. Consider it an "ideal" shot, assuming maximum speed on both ships. Or a computer "guess" of where to fire. Then adjust your sights depending on the actual situation.

Yes as others have said the lead indicator is inaccurate. It's more of a general idea of where to aim, IMO.

Also, with regard to the actual crosshairs, I used the command (not sure on the exact syntax but I think it's ...) /ui reticleeselect ## (where ## can be 00 to 07). A few of them take away the actual dot in the middle of the crosshairs. I've found that to be helpful as well.

The lead indicator is only accurate about 10% of the time.

Also to add ... I found things to be pretty tough at 1111 Alliance. Once you get certed for the long prob you'll have a lot more firing power being able to fire the turret as well.

Me too, I found it better to use a player crafted Headhunter until I was certed to fly the Longprobe.
