Thread: Dropships?

I recently got an idea fora decent blend of atmospheric and ground combat.
Rebels and Imperials should be given a dropship-like craft that, when in space, is able to fly intoa planet's atmosphere, drop off roughly 16 troops, and get back to space.
My idea is making a dropship craft for Rebels and Imperials;
Rebels could get the Gallofree Arms Medium Transport, and Imperials could get the Incom Y-4 "Raptor" Transport.
The dropships would be multi-player ships with much lower mass than other Multi-Person ships (probably around 100-125k), and would be sacrificing weaponry for armor and shields.
No furniture or items can be placed in the interior of the dropships (though there could be storage lockers on the walls that serve as containers). The ships would be small, with stations for the pilot, copilot, two gunners and 16 or so passenger seats.
When approaching a planet from space, the pilot is given the option to select a landing zone. The pilot must input the coordinates ofthe landing zone, and anyone sitting in the passenger seats would be immediately sent down to the landing zone (such as the escape pod with the Corvette), and the crew of the dropship would have to fly to the space station and land at the starport.
Once landed, a small shuttle would appear at the coordinates of the LZ. Inside the shuttle, the attackers would be found. There would be a small console inside the shuttle that, when used, would open the shuttle up (to wait for when the players had all loaded),and the attackers would storm out.
Now, due to the danger of such a fast insertion (such as to attack an enemy faction base), the other players would have three options.
The first option is to dispatch fighters to intercept the dropship. If successful, the opposing strike force would be totally destroyed, hampering enemy efforts to eliminate the base.
This option would instill the need to send an escort along with the dropship, as the light weapons required to save mass would be insufficient against four or five X-Wings/TIE Advanceds.
The second option of the defenders is to install anti-air turrets around their base. If the LZ of the attackers is within about 1 kilometer of the anti-air turrets, the LZ will be pushed to a random, farther location, and the attackers would suffer wounds and battle fatigue. The more turrets there are, the farther the attackers would be pushed away, and the more damage they would take.
The third option of the defenders is to dispatch patrols to search for the location of the shuttle. If the shuttle is found before the attackers could open up, the defenders could dispatch a counter-strike force to ambush the attackers as they climb out.
To prevent the attackers from landing 10 meters away from the faction base, the landing shuttle could be blasted to shreds by faction turrets, efficiently killing each and every occupant.
So, anyone have some feedback? Flames? Comments? I personally think this would be a good way of infusing both the ground and space elements of the GCW.

This is a pretty good idea. I hope it gets noticed and used by the devs.

How can there be a 2 gunners if there would be no guns on the ship?
Other wise interesting idea.

Why not just go to the base by bike?
There must be a reason to take the odds of being shot down by fighters in space or blasted away by anti air turrets while landing.
So, the base would have to be in a zone where you only get into with a shuttle. But how can you justify that? Put a fence around it and display a system message "no, you can't go there"?
Or maybe on a planet that is rebel / imp only and has no spaceports to land at for players of the other faction. But since we won't see any new planets without a new expansion that is not going to happen.

better Idea then most others that concern atmosperic flying, but it isn't really needed in the game at this point.

why the medium and Y4? why not a version of the nova and the lambda?

Because the idea behind dropships are that they're small, lightly armed and armored vessels designed for the sole purpose of speedy delivery of troops. The Nova Courier and even the Lambda are designed as heavily armed assault transports; the Medium and Y-4 are designed to simply move troops and supplies from A to B.

Well if the GCW gets fully implemented (espcially some of the stuff that was in beta that didnt make it in live), you will get something kinda like that.
Anyone recall the factional 'recall' ability? The one that allows you to call in a shuttle to pull you out of a hotspot and take you to the nearest starport?
of course Imps already have this (just no control over it). They already have probe droids looking for rebs and dropships dumping STs all over the place.
