I havn't played either SWG or JTL very long. But I have several of the SW spacegames, and seeing some of them in SWG would be nice. Now many of these ideas are probably been thought of... but I want to send out my thoughts to the community To make SWG fun, you want it to be realistic, right? (thats a debate done about 100 times on the forumbutI'll pick it up again Well I have some ideas that would make piloting a bit more fun, though perhaps some may be slightly demanding from the servers.


1: The possibility to land on flat ground or have a garage

Now this is as far as I know an old idea. But I think it may be good. I live in a small town about 2K from a spaceport. I can choose to spend money on a shuttleport, or i can take a swoop and ride for a couple of minutes. I say that larger cities can get a ship parking garage or something. Or, players can buy one at the cost of 2-3 lots.


2: A larger spaceport

Think about it... a spaceport in the game is nothing more than an enhanced shuttleport with starship terminals. How about a startport a bit like in Theed, where you can actually see your ship physically and walk into it to take off. The starship terminals can be used for repairs and maintenance. This brings me on to the next idea



3: Fly down to the ground

Now what would be fun if you were to press launch ship instead of travel, is that you to a certain point take off from your planet! Riding up to a space station would take an hour.. but you could fly... say.. 500-1000 up before you approach the station. It should work the same way on landing. The spaceports could have tractor beams. You do not have to pilot your ship the final stretch... but actually seeing your ship in the spaceport(or garage as stated above) would really give you a feeling of beeing a pilot!



4: Space mission terminals

Doing duty missions is fun. But only to a certain point! A space mission terminal would make piloting more quest like. Also adding a group function to take out harder targets would be extremely fun! Say a 10 man rebel group taking out an Imperial convoy with a star destroyer or two! I'm now a low level rebel pilot. for all i know quests like this exists... (atleast one man quests) But I ame getting a bit tired of doing tie fighter duty missons, and disabling freighters. This would be a great idea for privateer pilots. They say anyone with enough credits can hire them. Well let them go completely freelance! Say you could carry cargo from Tatooine to Corellia and an imp. convoy shows up. They inspect you and see that you are carrying illegal spices. Well, you make a run for it and hope for the best, or you fight them off. Taking out black suns don't cut it in the long run. I would love to see JTL as more of an X-wing alliance game. I remember the quest game where you were a privateer carrying stuff, beeing afraid of the imperial TIEs... Halfway through they would discover your base, and you flee to the rebellion. Your family's space station (yup.. a family had a space station) gets blown to pieces by a star destroyer. Then you fight back the empire bla bla bla happy ending. Or X-wing vs. TIE-fighter where the quests are really quests! (not properly story based but still). The missions go beyond escorting freighters with refugees. They have primary, secondary and sometimes tertiary goals. Seeing proper quests like this would be awesome. Even including a couple from the start. People get soon tired of duty missions, and it may be the reason for not seeing that many pilots in space.



5: Guild spacestations

More spacestations would be a nice feature. Here you could for example repair for free, get your weapons reloaded, walk inside the station and have your own bunk bed and quarter and place a couple of your items there. This would have to be extremely expensive ofcourse... but fun. This could also work as a PvE/PvP base in a space based GCW. Turrets,computer controlled ships instead of the frightened rebel recruits etc.




6: Bigger spacestations and several types

Having played X-wing vs. TIE-fighter and X-wing alliance I have seen serveral kinds of stations. THEY WERE DIFFERENT FROM ONE ANOTHER! Some had platforms you landed on, some had hangars. Some were big, some were small. Some were imperial, some were rebel, some were privatly owned. I think I saw 20-30 different stations. Seeing the same type of station everywhere is boring! The odds of Corellia having the same small station as Nym has on Lok, is, well... small. CorSec would have a gigantic station where pilots could rest. Vendors could be places where pilots could buy parts if they wanted to upgrade their ship. In X-wing Alliance, the family were almost constantly out in space! In the in game e-mails I could remember the father in the house visiting a planet once. Mostly he traveled to a space station to get what he needed.

Let us walk in the stations! A pilots life is up in space! not on the ground. A pilot should very seldom have to walk on solid ground. Even trainers should be at the stations. Don't blame it on physics... the players stand still! The stations are always in the same coordinates. Also this would allow for a feature mentioned earlier. Seeing your ship physically. A pilot could walk to the hangar, or platform seeing his ship! He would have to buy a spacesuitor something and equip it to enter the hangar. On platform stations players enter their ship from a hatch on the platform.

Last of all. Make the stations bigger! The current station can maximum hold 3 Y-wings in the hangar, and not at all house people like proper stations do. Maybe have room fora bridge but come on. Make it bigger and allow us to walk in it like it was a small city or something. Add banks, bazaars, maybe a small cantina and a medical center. And ofcourse... allow people to rent vendor space in public stations.




5: Random freigther traffic

This is pure eye candy. The only traffic i see is the traffic made by quests. What would be nice is non targetable random freighters. NOT the same model 10 times... but about... 5-6 different kinds. There are not only 10 different kinds of ships in the universe Not all wouldhave to be player controllable, but they could be what Flightsimmers would call AI planes. Lower graphics, therefore less graphically demanding.


Please give your opinion here. Most of these ideas are probably thought of, but it would be nice to see your reaction. If I think of any more I'll update the post. Oh.. I'm leaving early tomorrow, so if you have any thoughts for me, come now I won't be back before friday/saturday


With these features I bet more people would "Jump to Lightspeed"

Uhm... right. Maybe I'm asking too much, but some constructive criticism and perhaps some other ideas may be nice?

Something like that I had in mind for the "bigger spacestations". Just add GCW to it And you got mine.

Lets make ship certs tied to faction affilation and not the pilot profession, I am a 4/3/3/3 neutral pilot, well since the tef fix I have since joined the Empire (again). I would like to be an Imp pilot but not at the expense of grinding pilot again...............

All of your ideas are excellent!!! I actually posted several of them during the beta testing of JTL only not as in-depth. I also included a bit of a devil's advocate argument to the ideas. For example I originally wanted to just land on the planet but could see how certain areas would be crowded with ships (your purchased garage takes care of that problem. But as far as seeing your ship at the starport; I admit that would be great but the starport would have to be it's own planet to accomodate the many different types and sizes of ships parked there by who knows how many players at once....(and now my argument to my argument)....The starport would have to have a waiting list for ships requesting to land (same with the spacestations) as our airports have in reality. (and here's where your idea gets better) that would encourage players to diversify where they land (instead of crowding coronet starport for example...they could land in tyrena or Doaba Geurfel) thus bringing life to these otherwise ghost-like cities. One could also dock their ship at the space station and catch a shuttle from the space station to a starport on the planet. (see I solved my own parking space issue...I'm one confused guy aren't I?).


I would also like to be able to dock with a big ship and walk around in it...heck maybe even live on one. a PA battleship of sorts that could be defended via turrets and Ops stations by those on board. Even have some fighters in the hangar with pilots living on board. Faction rank could really come into play here as you could have a Captain of the vessel, designated Pilots for teh Vessel, various crew positions, heck even a security team should teh vessel be boarded LMAO...i think too much While I don't see these ships landing on the planet I do see them docking with your much larger space stations (man what would be the cost and resources to build one of those??) Anyway I think I'll end it there...I've rambled on enough. Let me know what you guys think.
