At first, I totally bought into the thinking that the Z-95 Headhunter is the way to go before getting certified to fly something like the X-Wing. It's fast, maneuverable, and overall has been a really fun ship to fly. It got me through my first tier, and through some of my second. And I, like many others, disliked the Y-Wing almost as soon as I started flying with it. It's slow, sluggish and generally not as well suited to dogfighting.
That was before I got a friend of mine to jump into the gun turret. WOW. Having an extra set of eyes and an extra gun makes ALL the difference. Have a TIE Fighter on your six? Have your gunner swing around and blow him away. Being attacked by multiple pirates? Engage them all simultaneously. It also really helped that when we played, we were talking the whole time on our cellphones (with headsets).
Another great thing about the Y-Wing is its huge mass limit compared to the Z-95. So not only can my friend man the gun, but I've got room on the ship to add just about any component I need to maintain our survivability. Better guns, bigger reactor, capacitor that holds more projectile juice. My Z-95 is already fully loaded with no room to grow.
Sooo...I don't know how much fun the single-player longprobe would be, but for now I'm all about the Y-Wing.I'm just going to pouras manycredits and components I caninto my new battle wagon.

Heh, yeah, we play at night when the minutes are free anyway so it's no big deal. So much easier to just call and go.

The Y wing may be a boat but its a great ship for getting friends who otherwise would be WAY to low to assist in a mission a chance to help out, have fun, make great xp. I went all the way through tier 2 by assisting friends as a gunner for the teir 3 and teir 4 quests. No way could my own ship survive what we were figthing but in the turret I helped alot. Also since I do not have to concentrate on flying I can pay alot more attention to what the enemy is doing.

Actually once you get to be 4/4/3/3 You can use Level 9 Components. Putting Mark IV armor on a Y-Wing Long Probe makes an amazing difference, The thing is a Tank! It is a great ship to team up with if there are few X-Wings in your group. It is an excellent close support spacecraft.

The turret is pretty sweet. I would say though that it can be more problematic than help if you get someone in there who doesn't know what they're doing. Since you both draw from the same power supply if they just hold down their trigger you'll find no power to your own weapons.
At least, that was my experience recently.
