Use the "[" and the "]" keys. This will target Engine,Weapons, Reactor.

Or you can go into your key map and assign it any key you want.

Disable works great if you start to get in over your head. You can disable a ship much faster than you can destroy it.

I have all the keys that I use in combat re-assigned so that I can easily access them with my left hand without looking. My right hand of course controls my mouse. I also found it handy to map a key that sets my throttle at .66 speed. That way I can toggle between 2/3 speed and full throttle. This is very handy while dog fighting.
