You need a paint kit to change the color and a texture kit to change the color "pattern". You can also rename your ship from the datapad.

ahem...

I approached no fewer than three shipwrights and asked " how do I paint my ship?"

Not one of them knew. One said it had "something" to do with a "paint kit".

You buy a paint kit and texture kits from a shipwright. When you use a paint kit it asks you which ship you want to paint and then asks what colour. A good thing to do is to select the ship you are going to colour from the starship menu so that it's on visible on screen. Therefore you can visually see what the colour would look like before you confirm it. A paint kit allows for one paint pass of both the primary and secondary colours, ie. Once you confirm the primary colour the ability to paint the secondary colour still remains with the same paint kit. You don't require a seperate paint kit for the primary and secondary colours pass then.

The texture kit is basically the same thing as a paint kit. The only difference comes in that when you use the texture kit it asks you which craft to apply it to but it doesn't allow you to confirm the application. Therefore it's kinda of hit-or-miss as to whether the texture kit you applied will be something you like. I wish there was a way to confirm the application of the texture kit because it's a pain at first cycling through the various texture applications till you find the one you want.

...and Vixo, this isn't a stupid question as there really isn't much documented on paint/texture. I'm sure that alot of people are glad that you asked this smart question.

I think the texture kit is bugged. I swear I remember clicking through the textures once in beta and being able to see and choose shich texture I liked the best. I did this with a dunelizard.
