Thread: Elite piloting professions What would you like to see?

Well, just thought I'd make a thread where people could have fun and speculate what type of Elite piloting professions they'd like to see in a future expansion. I figure there will be some eventually to add new features and ships. Following are some I think would be cool, along with possible things they'd get. Each faction would have thier own variation of course. Also, some of the names suck right now because I'm making this all up as I go along.

Bomber Specialist- For when you need to take down a cap ship or blow a frigging big hole in something.

- certs for 3 heavy bomber type ships

- ability to use higher end bombs and bombing equipment

- ability to load multiple bomb packs to increase payload. (to help maintain usefulness of older ships)

- abilities which allow them to take more damage

- enhanced targeting for bombing

Fighter Specialist - Specializes in fighter to fighter engagements

- certs for 3 light attack ships

- ships piloted by fighter specialist get slight bonuses to speed and agility above their standards (once again to maintain usefulness of older ships to the Fighter Specialist).

- various specials to aid in dog fighting

- enhanced tracking of other ships (all ships within a certain range have a box on them or something so they can be tracked easier without use of the radar)

Flight Leader - Like Squad Leader, but in space.

- certs for 2 mid-range ships

- extended radar range

- ability to give targets numbers and assign to flight

- passive bonuses given to all members of "flight" he/she leads (such as the extended radar)

Commander - possibly an elite-elite off of Flight leader, gotta make this hard to get.

- at novice, cert for a small "command ship" about the size of current multi-person ships, maybe you could use some of the gunboats/cruisers

- at master, cert fora "mini" capital ship that players can dock with and travel with (plus walk around in, think something slightly smaller than the vette from a size standpoint)

- cangroup with multiple "flights" at once to communicate with them all

- assign waypoints to multiple flights

- live 3d view of space sector with info on all ships (for coordinating attacks, making waypoints, etc)

Of course some new dynamics would have to be added. For example "flights" as a type of group in space. Could possibly be a permenant group where the Flight Leader can assign a flight name to the group. Player to player docking would also have to be added along with some other small features. The bonuses given to bombers and fighter specialist would be so that the olders ships stay useful to them, but still they have a benefit while using them vs other non-specialists or someone with a different specialty. For an example a Reb flying a Y-Wing (cert still at basic reb pilot) should not be able to bomb as well as a Bomber Specialist flying a Y-Wing.

This, of course, is just kind of a wish list. Anyone else have any fun ideas?

I like this idea of split specializations in the pilot professions. Missions could be geared more towards what the pilot's strengths are, and it would allow greater differentiation between the pilots and ships in the game. It would also allow for greater specialization in guilds for when the GCW is revamped and hopefully space combat will play a major role.

However, given that JTL just came out, I seriously doubt the dev's would undertake a major overhaul of the game already to implement this. Maybe 6 months or a year down the road?

Yeah, I don't expect anything soon either. I get very bored at work (where I first started thinking about this last night) and just decided to put some actual thought into it today. Definitely wouldn't expect anything for at least 6 months at the minimum, probably more like a year for the next expansion though. Once again, just thought I'd post it for fun.

I'd like to see the Elite Pilot profs come into the game...and you're on the right track with several of your points. But I have to disagree with giving modifiers to agility/speed/etc on the ships. I'd instead prefer having new equipment certifications for each Elite Prof. Perhaps could be placed into sockets on helmets. For example....

Elite Bomber -

Enhanced Missile Lock Computers

Bomb Bay Certification (doubles ammo load)

Heavy Armor Certification (allows for another armor layer)

Elite Fighter Pilot -

Blaster Convergence Computer

Thrust Nozzles(would be in addition to boosters)

Directional Thrusters (improve handling)

Capital Ship Commander -

Dual Shield Generators

Turret Control Computer

Docking Ring Attachment (allows for reloads/repairs of smaller ships)

Add in several new ship certs per Elite tree...and you're talking a NICE setup.

Huh? He clearly stated that the purpose of this thread is to have fun and speculate. I see no indication of "complaining". Chill, bro.

I wouldn't mind (of course, being the smuggler that I am) seeing implemented an opportunity for us to modify ships or parts. Illegally, of course, which would bring about the possibility of being attacked by the "policing" elements. Like a CorSec ship that launches droid fighters at you after a scan. High-tail it, or fight.

and what's wrong with stating what we'd like to see in the future? Nowhere in the thread is the word "NOW" used, apart from your post

Yes you are right, I should clarify. I was not dis'n the post, the post was great. I was just stating what I would like to see......and again this is one of the few good post's, but the majority are not.

Repair/Salvage specialist - have a profession that performs the task of the Rebel commands of repair, repair friend, in-space reloading. This profession would give you a repair ship and allow you to cruise around and offer repairs for a price. You would have to have repair kits from shipwrights, and you could also load up missle packs.

Smuggler - hybrid profession that requires master pilot and master smuggler from the ground. Give them some new content. Be transport missions, blockade running missions.....

Mercenary - requires master privateer. Getting mercenary allows you to align with a faction and become authorized to use one factions ships.

Gun boat, cruiser, shuttlepilot - I doubt we will ever get Star Destroyers or Corvettes. But I think some day you could see play flown gun boats and maybe lambdas. A new pilot certification for the big boys.

Fair enough.

Scientific Specialist : I deliberately left this vague, but it could be perhaps of space surveyor for nebulae and asteroid based resources (my third and fourth titles).

Orbital Surveyor: A space bound version artisan surveying. You take your ship into close proximity of a planet and start scanning the surface, You then get global results of resource concentrations, with which you can then land and head out to that area to refine your search.

Asteroid Miner: Mine resources directly from asteroids. Either by use of a mining laser (fires continuously at rock like a cutting torch, and 'sucks up' the vapourised rock), or by blasting asteroids apart and catching the fragments. You'd then take them to a ground based refinery (which could be realised in same way as a factory?).

Nebula Harvestor: Goes into a nebula and collects the gases present.

Resources from the latter two should be "exotic" such that they would provide better artisan experimentation results, and thus make them worth collecting.

I like the salvage idea that mkappus gave.

Question to you all though: Since these are "elite" professions, we can assume that mastering one of the three current pilot professions would be a pre-requisit. Therefore should these "elite" space professions cost skill points?

Personally, I'd rather see this tied to ground-game professions, particularly the hybrids, since they have such little to do now. Give us unlockable content with certain combinations: Pilot + (existing) Squad-Leader == Wing Commander, Pilot + Commando == Bombardier, Pilot + Smuggler == Space-Pirate, Pilot + Bounty-Hunter == Intergalactic Jedi-Griefer, etc.
