Can someone give me a brief lesson here?
I assume using droids is how you get many of the useful functions that come automatically with other sims?
Do you want a low speed droid interface or a high?

Low speed interface, the droid commands let you do such things as mamage your shields, weapons and engines.
There is a dizzying amount of commands, most of which noone uses. The most popular are:
Reactor overload 4: Privateer. Boosts your reactors output a great deal at the cost of some initial damage to HP.
Reactor normalization: Privateer.Resets your reactor to standard settings.
Weapon overload 3: Imperial. Sets your weapons to cause more damage and your capacitor to recharge faster at the cost of using more power.
Engine overload 3: Imperial. Boosts your engines speed and handling ability at the cost of minor initial damage to HP. and at the cost of more power.
Engine normalization: Imperial. Resets your engines to default settings.
Shield reinfocement front moderate: Rebel. Transfers 50% of your rear shields HP to the front shield.
Shield reinforcement rear moderate: Rebel Transfers 50% of yourfront shields HP to therear shield.
(Both are very handy in situations where one shield is beaten right down yet the other is still full.)
What you do is get a droid programming chip froma DE, program it with the radial menu that brings up a list of available commands for your profession. Then transfer the chip to your datapad, and drag it into your droid/computer.(the droid/computer opens up inside your datapad just like a backpack would.)
Your droid/computer has a Capacity. And each chip takes up a certain amount of space. In order to hold all the commands i listed above you will need at least a LVL4 droid/computer. as you progress through the tree you can use lesser commands such as weapon overload 2 that take up less space in the droid/computer.
To use the commands themselves in space you simply open the actions menu. CTRL-A. And hit the Astromech tab. All the droid commands your droid currently holds appear there and you can drag them to your toolbar, or create a custom macro to bind them to keys as i did.
Lastly you can use commands from any faction. So you can trade your imperial commands with your rebel friends for their commands. Or visit a vendor that sells pre recorded chips and buy them all. (quite pricey)
