Um, there are a few errors here...
With both the Smuggler's Alliance and CorSec paths, you kill Imps, and the CorSec one even has a mission or two where you attack rebels.
Further, you do not lose faction for faction kills in space. I run missions with my Imperial guildmates all the time, and I'm rebel on the ground, CorSec privateer in space.

There do seem to be differentiations. However, as a general rule of thumb, the above will apply.
As SA, it seems that sometimes I cannot attack Hutts. Other times, depending on my actions in space, I can.
The above is a generalization so that one can expect the possibility of not being able to help their allies if they are a part of an opposing-aligned faction group.
***Additionally, the RSF members in our guild have yet to be able to help the rebels in any missions.

The recruiter for Privateer is Gil Burton in the Bestine Hotel. He will present you with the three choices. Once you select RSF, he will then give you the waypoint of the trainer you need to go to on Naboo.

If you're a privateer, rebel and imperial ships that are not targets ini your own mission will not be aggro for you...however, you can manually target them under your recticle with the X-key and attack at will. Again, I'm an officer in the Alliance on the ground, CorSec privateer in space, and have been helping imperial guildmates run their missions with great success.
If your RSF members haven't been able to help, I'd submit a bug report.

I understand that. There are inconsistencies. But, the majority that I have interviewed have verified that, for RSF's, non-mission-related Imperial TIE'sare white dots (unattackable). I have not had a chance to do that _much_ with CorSec, as our guild currently has RSF, SA, Imperial, and Rebel. Some up and coming CorSec are not far enough up the pilot tree to give a substantially consistent account.
Note: I am speaking of once you Master the profession.
