The last thing I want to do is contribute to an unfounded rumour but this particular rumour has been floating around for some time now. It appears to be popping up over and over in various places time and time again. Scott submitted an article today from Miss-Match Gaming Network:

I know that this is forbidden from the higher-ups, but we like to let our minds run wild here. I have heard it from the grapevine and have discussed this with a good friend of mine who has also heard the same. Apparently Lucasarts is displeased with the way that SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) has handled Star Wars' MMORPG Galaxies. Now the day after the JTL expansion goes live, they plan to announce the second expansion pack and the divorce between SOE and Lucasarts. They will then give update us on the changes that will be made when Lucasarts takes the controls.

Speculation has gone on that they are looking towards a SWG with no players being Jedi. It is said that Lucas is displeased with the game but excited about it's potential. As a Star Wars fan and a gamer, I think (if this is true) that this will be a turn for the better. Whatever Lucasarts does with it flying solo, it is sure to do Star Wars justice. Stay tuned and we will keep you informed.

An almost identical rumour can be found on Joystiq:

Rumor has it, LucasArts is not happy with the way that Sony has handled Star Wars Galaxies. Sources speculate that once the expansion, Jump to Lightspeed, is launched, Lucas will announce a second expansion pack along with its divorce from Sony. This will be followed by future announcements concerning the changes that will be made once Lucas is commanding the reins. These changes may include the removal of (playable) Jedi in Galaxies. LucasArts would probably have been better off keeping Star Wars in-house in the first place. Lesson learned.

Again, these are only rumours for now. I suppose we'll find out in a couple of weeks.

This is something the community should know and if there is no truth to it it should be squashed by the developers just wanted to know.

Mismatch then reported later that they were contacted by John Smedley the President of SOE who completely denied the rumor. I think its safe to say this rumor has been debunked.

While I dont believe the rumor floating around, I do have this to say. Do you honestly think the President of SOE is going to publicly admit that his company is not only going to lose its most valuable outside contractbut alsothat it was due to SOE's own incompetence?

He is not the one that can debunk it. I dont trust anything SOE says til I actually see it. They have lied to us time and again. Its like common practice around here. Now if Lucas or someone high up at Lucasarts said it then I might believe it.

Just because Smedley made a phone call to deny the rumor doesn't mean the rumor isn't true.

Why does everyone put so much faith into Lucas Arts? The only good thing they have produced was a couple of movies. Their PC games are all okay to down right trash. What makes everyone think Lucas Arts has all the answers? Do you all realize that it was Lucas Arts that said Jedi would be in the game when the lead designer at SOE didn't want them in the game? Do you realize it was Lucas Arts that told SOE to put everything on hold until the Jedi revamp was worked out? Do you realize that SOE can't do ANYTHING without going though Lucas Arts? Hmm something to think about isn't it?

Here is my opinion

Lucas Arts is going to take back the development of the game. Notice the job posting for a Sr Director for SWG on the Lucas Arts site. Also, note that Lucas Arts signed an agreement to create a Japanese version, and someone else is distributing it in Japan, not Sony.

Lucas Arts will continue to use SOE to supply the "on-line" nature of the game. Sony servers, bandwidth..... I don't believe Lucas Arts has the infrastructure to run an on-line game, nor would it make sense for them to try and build that up from scratch.

The rumor was started due to a "job opening" on the Lucas Arts website.... this is for a position which already has an existing similar position, and SWG Is expanding into Japan. IT however even states IN the job description that they would be working withoutside contractors.....

The rumor is false its just people do as people usually do and twist and turn things without passing along the rest of the information just because they have a bone to pick with the game Lucas Arts has always had their hand in the Production of SWG the Producer is after all, a Lucas Arts Employee.

Rumor - Debunked.
