Please excuse such an idiot level question
Shields have two entries for 'Front Shield Hitpoints' and 'Rear Shield Hitpoints'.
Each of these has two numbers seperated by a slash. Sometimes the numbers are identical, sometimes the first number is 0, and sometimes the first number is a bit lower than the second.
What's the significance of the different values?
Oh, and while I'm here
High recharge rates are better than low ones, yes?
Thanks.

The first number is the current value of that shields (if it's 0 the shield hasn't recharged yet) so wehn you get into space you may need to spend a couple minutes waiting for the shields to fully recharge.
The second value is the maximum damage that shield can take (what it will charge up to)
And yes a high recharge rate is better...
Hope that helps

the hitpoints numbers mean this:
<current> / <maximum>
For hitpoints and armour on a shield unit, if the current is below the maximum then you need a repair kit to fix it.
For 'Front Shield Hitpoints' and 'Rear Shield Hitpoints', these can't be repaired, but they do regenerate once you get into space.
Recharge Rate - higher is better.

and remeber that the Devs recently changed it so that despite having different Front and Back ratings, in space they equal out. Take the 2 numbers and divide by 2, that is your actual Front and Back armour

Thanks for the help. I was avoiding the shields with 0 before the slash no matter what was after it. I'll go back and look again at what I've got in storage - bound to be something better than is currently equipped
