Hi all.

I am currently in the process of setting up a ventrillo server for SPACE only (for the time being) for every server in SWG. I want your feedback, Idea's, feelings and input on what will make it "work" for you.

Please keep in mind that unless you have a valid reason for NOT wanting something listed below, the following is unchangable and should only be expanded upon for the betterment of the coming free system.

1) Is "Ventrillo" the Absolute way to go or should options like "teamspeak" be looked at as well? I must admit, having used both, I do prefer Ventrillo.

2) There will be multiple rooms. A main room for every server's general Space (JTL) area and the Kessel and DeepSpace rooms. Should there be more? Less? Why?

3) Options for users to create small, private channels for missions, Sorties..etc. Should this be limited in number and/or priority?

4) Admins. We all know we have our share of Short Bus escapees in this game. How should that be controlled and moderated?

5) Help channels. Something missing in this game since release has been a help channel. Lord knows the CSR's in this game are for crap, so lets take care of each other. What I would really like to see is a channel where people can ask questions and get oral walkthroughs for crafting, grinding, missions..etc.

Is this something you would currently (or as a n00b) would/wouldhave utilized or do you see this as something needed?

Again, this will be a free service for you. It WILL happen within the next month, but until it is balanced your current and "release" input will be valued.

So please, let me hear your thoughts on this. If your interested in helping by being a future server admin, please let me know in PM.

This is usually the killer....

How much bandwidth do you have available for your server?

Is it going to be public?

Ventrilo and Teamspeak are both good servers.

Thanks for your quick reply (especially considering the hour).

As per public, good question. Yes and No.

While anyone can join the ventrillo server thats on JTL, in order to maintain any sort of discipline "in the ranks" I am thinking of having a webforum (maybe on one of my existing sites) for people to sign up to first. In this way, once they sign up on the site, they have to register with the same username on ventrillo. If they turn out to be a moron, they can easily be removed then (the cms I use is E107) by IP. Generally (I've noticed) once someone is banned once, even if they remake a name and come back..they generally wont do it twice.

Unless it is maliscious.. in which case the entire IP Range can be banned effectively as a last resort to permanently block them.

So yes, Public Access.. protected for the "Youngins" sake.

Bandwidth isn't an Issue as I run a few servers. Right now my bandwidth is about 1.5 TeraBytes per month to give you an idea as to how much I can handle.

I personally like Ventrillo better just because of the options to have different channels, hold more people and have a better user interface with better voice quality. My guild runs a top of the line ventrillo that we pay money into. Not that teamspeak doesn't have the option to make different channels, it just has a worse user interface with worse voice quality and does not tell who leaves or enters the server by name.

This is probably the most useless thing you'll hear all day, but the best way to find out how to improve something is to just jump in the deep end and do it .

Start with maybe just one channel for your favourite server, monitor it, see how it grows. Maybe expand it into a few rooms if it gets crowded. Gradually grow the network outwards to other servers. This is probably the best way to go about making sure everythings working in tip-top shape, rather than panning ideas out on paper before putting them into action.

Of course, a little foresight is always useful .

Crixx, Xicrx and Crixxorian Darkmoon - Rebellion, Corsec and Imperial Ace Pilots respectively.
"When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return."
"If your pvp battles in space only last a few seconds YOU need practice. The game isn't broken, you just suck!" - Thik
"There's no sensation quite like learning to fly. Tounge-tied and twisted, just an earth-bound misfit, I." -Pink Floyd
"One/two shot PvP is good because this is a game of EVASION. NOT ABSORBTION" - Big mean heartbreaker.
"Sod implementing anything half-decent, we have SWG to make! OLOL!"
"We already have expertise in space. It's called a brain." - Leaph.

I was actually thinking the same thing, so there will probably be a server running for sunrunner beginning... maybe as early as tonight. (time allowing).

I will have to do a few things first for it to happen, but no later than tomorow there will be one galaxy being served. What i see for it right now in how it will look for rooms:

Sunrunner1

|____________Space Chat(Imperial)

|____________Space Chat(Rebel)

|_________HelpRoom

Sunrunner2

|____________Space Chat(Imperial)

|____________Space Chat (Rebel)

|_________HelpRoom

Sunrunner3

|____________Space Chat(Imperial)

|____________Space Chat(Rebel)

|_________HelpRoom

Sunrunner PVP

|____________Sunrunner Kessel(Imperial)

|____________Sunrunner Kessel(Rebel)

|_________DeepSpace(Imperial)

|_________DeepSpace(Rebel)

As you see, it is easily expandable in this format. It also keep the channels clear between factions for combat effectiveness purpouses. Depending on traffic during the testing phases, I'll add rooms for a general char for those wanting to gather groups or what not to get into space..etc. Perhaps even a "Wanted" channel for people to request new ships, etc from shipwrights (HOWEVER! Shipwrights CANNOT spam oral sales pitches as in cnet..etc. they can only reply to a request)

OK, everything is being setup for a SunRunner Server live tonight.

if you would like to help this endeavor out, go to www.Whats.in, signup and sometime this evening you will receive an email with ventrillo login instructions.

Focus changed to the Bria server. Sunrunner participants dont seem to want this.

OK slight adjustment:

Was unable to get this done last night due to family reasons (Never have children). But in a way i think it is kinda good cause I am planning on tweaking the plan a bit.

Instead of general voice channels for space divided by faction, I think having Combat wings set up is the way to go here. follow:

Say we have... 30 people on a server for each faction that want to do this. having 6 combat wings with 5 planes each, each with their own patrol schedule and their own commander.

In this idea, rebels and imperials will both have the ability to have their wing commanders set up various tactical groups ( ie; 1 A Wing, 2 X Wing, 1 B Wing and one heavy per wing) to be a mutlirole unit that could essentially be self sufficient in taking down any opposing force wings.

Wing commanders could then work with other wings to set up raids on say ISD's etc or just run patrol missions knowing full well an Imperial Wing will be there patrolling as well.

In the very least this could balance out the lack of Imperial players because most playing this go up looking for dog fights and if it is organised in a manner like this, it could help the feel of the GCW a bit (imho).

It would also be nice to have public rooms for each system. When you enter the system you could enter the room and talk with anyone in there. For me, this would greatly add to immersion. You fly into a sector, switch the comms and you can talk to whomever's flying near you.

All in all, though, it's an absolutely fantastic idea, and thanks for taking the time to put this all together.

OK, thats a good Idea: So here is how it can look then...

Sunrunner:

|_________Deepspace

| |________General Rebel

| |________General Imperial

| |________Rebel Wings

| | |______Alpha Wing

| | |______Bravo Wing (etc.)

| |________Imperial Wings

| |______Alpha Wing

| |______Bravo Wing (etc)

|____Corellian System(etc)

|______General Rebel

|______General Imperial

Neuts can join either depending on who hires them..etc.
