First, who do I have to bribe, pay off, maim or just kill to get rid of my spaceship canopy?

I got rid of it easily enough once but a few days ago, while in combat, I hit a button and now the canopy is back for good.

And speaking of combat, has anyone else notcied this or is it just me. I'm trying to get "special landing permission" from the Dantooine station. They give me a waypoint and like any good attack dog I go straight for it.

Only to find out that the straight line I took also happens to take me through a whole swarm of either Imps or Droids.

Fun.

One minute I'm tooling along, mentally preparing myself for the can of whoop I'm about to open on those poor Imperial stooges, next thing I know I've taken about half a dozen lasers up the 'ole tailpipe in the space (no pun intended) of about 2 - 3 parsecs, shields are gone, armor is going and my droid is writing me a "Dear Soon-To-Be-A-Burning-Cloud-Of-Space-Dust" letter.

Who's brainchild was this?

Put the free range on one side of the station, missions on the other.

Now, on to the actual ship components. Does anyone else think that actually having detailed information about what the components stats mean would be a good thing to have in the holocron? Not for nothing, but I have no idea what it means when I look at the manage screen and read that my shield has 0.0/745.56 hitpoints.

Also, perhaps giving us something with which to scale might be beneficial. Give us an idea of just how good those components might be. "Armor runs from x - y. Your armor has z hitpoints so it should be a fairly decent/good/excellent/crappy/poor/deathtrap addition." Something like this would go leaps and bounds to helping some of us who already have full time, dull, boring, menial jobs and do not want to have to play a game where searching for helpful information is as much part of the game as is lightsabers and James Earl Jones.

This post is written from the viewpoint of someone who has played numerous mmporpg's (Evercrack, Planetside, DAOC, etc) but is noob here.I've been playing for about a month. Some parts of this game feel like they let Jerry Lewis design it and the way it hides information that would make the gaming experience more comfortable is just plain odd.

I agree that the information given for JTL is pathetic. For one point the information regarding droids is virtually none-existant from SOE, and even on the player forums it is somewhat sparse.

As for getting to a waypoint without aggro, well, it happens on the surface, it happens in space, it's part of the game.

The canopy is controlled by the MISC catagory under options. You may also want to use /toggleCombatTaunts to switch off the annoying pop-ups of NPCs on the left hand side of the screen - personally I find they cause major PC lag to render the character, espcially during combat.

As for armour values, well that is more dominant upon weapons. Each weapon shows it's min-max damage, and the effectiveness (such as 0.7 for shields, 0.2 for armour). this dictates the damage done by that weapon. For those who still don't understand, if a weapon hits for 1000 damage, at 0.7 for shields, the shields would recieve 700 damage. This is presuming the shields have 700 capacity of course, otherwise left over damage is based upon the armour damage.

Higher the armour the better, but don't forget that high armour is all good and well, but if it takes up too much space, your invaluable shield may not fit

The only good way to figure out which components are good is to look around at other parts. There are a couple posts on this message board where Shipwrights went through and detailed how high they could get the stats on certain parts, but for many of the components looted parts are better. Also, each server has different resources that have spawned, making the best shield ever crafted on one server very different from the best shield crafted on a different server. It's really hard to tell you what's good and what's not across servers because of this.

Generally, the rule is that higher numbers are always better, except for mass, reactor energy drain, firing rate on weapons, and anything else that says drain in it (like capacitor drain on weapons). Mass and energy drain you want low, so that you can fit more parts in the ship and not overload your reactor. The lower the firing rate on weapons, the less time between shots, and the lower the drain the less energy they take out of the capacitor when they fire.

I'm not 100% sure on the armor/hitpoints on each component, but here's what I think is right. On armor (the component), the armor stat is how much damage the armor can take before you start taking damage to your chassis/components. On the rest of the parts, the armor is the same thing, how much damage that specific component can take before it starts getting destroyed. The hitpoint rating is how damaged the component actually is. If your shield or weapon has 500 hitpoints, it can take 500 points of damage before it will stop working until you repair it. Any damage to hitpoints will cause the part to stop functioning at is maximum capacity (when weapons are not at full hitpoints, they don't do as much damage when they hit, shields won't recharge as fast, your engine won't move you as fast, etc...). So, if your engine is at 250/500 hitpoints, it will be working at 50% efficiency, so you'll be going much slower than you normally would.

Hope this helps
